Cause of Five Acre Brush Fire Revealed

The cause of the five-acre blaze that sparked in Santa Ynez last week, named the Fletcher Fire, has been released.

The Santa Barbara County Fire Department reported the fire was started by a ride-on lawn mower in dry vegetation.

Hand crews and air support responded to the scene in the 1800 block of Fletcher Way as the fire had the potential to burn 15 acres. 

The Fire Department reminds residents to always have an extinguisher and/or water source nearby when operating power equipment in or around dry brush.

Additionally, it’s not advisable to use a lawn mower in the heat of the day or when the wind is blowing.

Five Acre Brush Fire Progress Stopped in Santa Ynez

Santa Barbara County firefighters stopped the forward progress of a five-acre brush fire in Santa Ynez Monday afternoon.

At 12:14 p.m., crews responded to the 1800 block of Fletcher Way for a reported 2-5 acre grass fire surrounded by vineyards with the potential to burn 15 acres.

County firefighters were joined by Air Support and Los Padres National Forest crews. 

The forward progress was stopped about thirty minutes later at 5 acres

Crews are currently working to line the fire and mop up the area over the next few hours.

The cause is under investigation.
