The Santa Barbara Police Department is partnering with the Coalition Against Gun Violence to remove unwanted guns from our community with the aim to reduce the risk of homicide, suicide and deadly accidents, often involving children.

The Anonymous Gun Buyback event will take place on Saturday, June 15, 2019 from 8:00 a.m. to noon in the parking lot of Earl Warren Showgrounds, 3400 Calle Real, Santa Barbara.

While supplies last, $80.00 gift cards from various retailers will be given to people turning in working handguns, shotguns, and rifles.  $160.00 gift cards from various retailers will be given to people turning in functioning California classified assault weapons.  The effort has been funded in part by a generous donation from the City of Santa Barbara.

After all firearms have been collected for the day, each serial number will be evaluated to ensure it has not been reported as stolen.  The weapons will ultimately be destroyed then recycled.

Ammunition for handguns, shotguns, and rifles will also be collected at the Gun Buyback, however gift cards will not be provided in exchange for this.

Additionally, free gun locks will also be given away to anyone wanting one, while supplies last.  Firearms must be transported to the Gun Buyback unloaded and in the trunk of a vehicle.

Under no circumstances should explosives or military ordnance such as hand grenades or artillery shells be brought to this event.

Coalition Against Gun Violence, Moms Demand Action and Local Leaders Gather to Raise Awareness About Gun Violence at Santa Barbara City Hall

In a somber ceremony at Santa Barbara City Hall, Coalition Against Gun Violence, Moms Demand Action and local elected officials joined together to commemorate National Gun Violence Awareness Day on June 7. The event also announced the June 15th Gun Buyback event.

Coalition Against Gun Violence President Toni Wellen reminded those gathered of staggering truths. In 2018, 40,000 Americans died from gunshots. Gun Violence remains a national pandemic that deserves attention every day.

Dozens in attendance wore orange clothing to kickoff Wear Orange Weekend, a national movement to bring attention to the color worn by hunters for safety. Wear Orange Weekend symbolizes the grim reality faced every day across this nation— that ordinary people with no expectation of encountering gun violence remain imperiled.

Santa Barbara County Supervisor Das Williams delivered a heartfelt address from the steps of City Hall as did District Attorney Joyce Dudley, a representative of Congressperson Salud Carbajal’s office and the local chapter of Moms Demand Action. Santa Barbara County and City both acknowledged the importance of June 7 and their roles in ensuring public safety.

  1. If this effort somehow prevents one injury or death it is worth it. But the term “buyback” infers that the guns were previously owned by those doing the “buying” which is obviously not the case. Trading a $2000 rifle for a $160 gift card makes no sense economically. From previous reports, the type and condition of most of the guns “bought back” in these efforts aren’t the guns used in criminal acts. And the photo shows some historic WW2 rifles that are collectors’ items.

  2. This window dressing public wealth transfer does not raise awareness about “gun violence” because it assumes the weapon of choice does the killing, not the killer who commits the acts of violence. We are just as unsafe as before; but now short of more tax dollar cash. Seems knives have been the recent weapons of choice of late anyway.

  3. If you make decisions based on data and reality, instead of being spoonfed your opinions by the NRA, you’d know that the presence of a firearm makes it more likely that someone in your household will be killed or injured, rather than making you safer.

  4. That’s funny because I am not spoonfed anything by the NRA. If you don’t teach your kids/wife/family about firearm safety, don’t keep it locked, or trigger locks on your fire arms then you my friend are putting your self in danger and family in danger. However if you teach them how to properly handle the firearm how to make sure it is not loaded keeping it locked then I am pretty sure you and your family will be fine and safer against home invasions or intruders. It seems like you are being “spoonfed” by the liberal machine that wants to strip us of our rights to bare arms. You sir are not a patriot and in my opinion a trader against your country for not supporting the amendments. You want all the guns taken away? Have the police stripped of their firearms as well, then lets see how much safer everyone will be.

  6. Moreover, the new laws restricting the purchase of ammunition are a step in the right direction, but need to be extended to cover the purchase and possession of ammunition reloading components like powder and primers.
