  1. Interesting hypothesis. Lowering the cycles will certainly miss some of those cases, but will miss pre-symptomatic cases as well, those that go one to get really sick and die. How would you test this hypothesis? One way might be to watch the hospitalization numbers and deaths. Those numbers should decrease as the case rate and % positive values drop. If the diagnostics have been manipulated to catch fewer positives, then hospitalizations, ICU beds occupied, ventilator use, and deaths should not decrease proportionally. There is already data for the first wave, in terms of how the hospitalizations and deaths waned as the case rates and positivity decreased. We should see a similar trend. If not….

  2. They’re way, way down, thanks to physical distancing, mask wearing, and the few shutdowns we’ve done. It just shows how much more contagious SARS-CoV-2 is than influenza. But, of course, to people who get their opinions from social media, it’s some sort of conspiracy.

  3. I really appreciate your thoughts. Those are great observations and legitimate concerns, intelligently and succinctly stated. It troubles me that tools used for scientific research may have been exploited by those in power in order to manipulate the public. I often pass our lab’s thermocyclers and wish the public had a better understanding of how PCR works, and chemistry in general. I’m afraid that much of the public is poorly educated in STEM, despite all the recent efforts being made. Is the gap widening? It’s frightening to think of the prospect where a small few keep a large amount of knowledge and control the rest with fear. I was down in Chichen Itza, wandering the site. From the “football” stadium, where the winners were sacrificed to bring messages to the god, such as more rain for the crops, to the observatory, one thing was clear. Those with scientific knowledge, who could predict the solar calendar using data, who kept that celestial knowledge all for themselves, were feared and respected. Let’s not let that happen again.

  4. VOR, yes, this is troublesome. Some on Edhat are suggesting we do not count the numbers ourselves, or question anything from “authorities”. That is a recipe for disaster. We are a nation of self-governance, that shouldn’t end at educating the public at questioning data.

  5. A message to Voice Of Reason: “Look what we’re dealing with now, a populace that shrugs off things they don’t understand as a “conspiracy” because it wasn’t on Fox News while anything on Fox News is fact not to be questioned.”

  6. Yellow, why do you automatically assume because I think CNN is a bunch of biased propaganda I don’t also think Fox is a different bunch of biased propaganda? I don’t have time to watch the news and you can’t get nearly as much info from watching as reading. A few times a week I peruse both websites because you won’t get the full story from either site. My disdain for the lying, two-faced crooks in the DNC who got a hall pass for 4 years because everyone was too focused on the orange man doesn’t mean there aren’t lying, two-faced, crooks in the GOP. They are both wolves, I think the DNC is worse because they’re a wolves in sheep’s clothing and have many convinced they’re the righteous “for the people” party which is a load of BS because both parties are bought and paid for by the oligarchs/billionaires.

  7. So genuinely grateful for honest and true conversation. I have been truly despondent with the divisiveness (intentional) that has taken over the conversation of friends and loved ones. If one does not align with the current CNN/NPR narrative, one is a white supremist, Qanon, Trumper. If one doesn’t align with FOX/Infowars or any sort of topic that seems to be supported by mainstream right wing news you are a leftist, liberal socialist out to destroy the country… and murder babies. They’re all fingers on the same puppet. It’s all propaganda. If you truly wanted to understand, look at the information the ‘other side’ is being told. Same picture, different story. Both frightening. You think the people that protested at the White House were a bunch of gun totin’ yokels? You should see the information they were being peddled. It makes much more sense if you understand the number of veterans, law enforcement and first responders that were in there, they have been told for months that their country is under attack, their constitution, their democracy – by media outlets, not just Herr Cheetoh. The “DNC” were being shown that the National Guard was called out to protect the inauguration, the “GOP” was shown that the National Guard was sent to sleep in a parking garage with a single bathroom afterward. It’s not one or the other, but that’s the corner they are trying to push us into to create the division.

  8. Thank you MountainMan for intellectually contributing to the conversation. The very old strategy of divide and conquer is alive and well. We are becoming weak as a society, rather than united. The enemy ceased to be the virus and quickly became each other. There’s no spreadsheet in the world that can predict where we’ll be in a short time, but I do believe it will not be a good place if this continues. We all have political differences, but if we cannot set that aside for even a second and come together to fight a package of molecules smaller than the eye can see, we are all doomed.

  9. Very true if your choice is to unfold bottom up. It’s an intelligent approach and certainly a method that beneficially produces data to comb through. However, standing at the entry of a testing protocol that was not designed for diagnostic, health related outcomes just more simply demonstrates the construction of a process that was ad hoc and evolving from the get go.. Add to that the immense political and industrial pressures applied via powerful participants and your left with a system that’s ripe for power-play positioning from those that will derive a profit from the underlying issue. Yet simply stated, the amplification of polymerase reaction of converted RNA strands utilizing a lab processing technique, which targets select structures within a sequence and then runs it at 35+ cycles such that it’s amplified 35 billion times is beyond reasonable. It’s been clearly demonstrated that doing so produces exponential artifacts that are entirely misleading. Thus, false positives are real. This novel experience has also not produced a statistically relevant base infection rate to even construct decent sensitivity/specificity numbers. Also, not focusing on prophylactics prior to or during acute illness episodes has systematically ignored our ability to work through the illness in process. That leaves us with only hope, as we’re asked to wait for a preventive solution that “cures all”. And this “cure by pill” method (i.e. vaccine) shows there are fundamental, logistic and potentially long term challenges that are not being considered. A solution today to add value immediately would be to ramp up and immediately (EUA) home use rapid testing kits so we can better target symptomatic carriers inside the envelop of all those potentially infected. That and focus more on empowering healthcare providers with whatever they need to adequately address and treat symptoms as they were educated and trained to do. Good day and all the best.

  10. Dem run states do not care about kids getting educated. More uneducated people equals more people dependent on big government which equals more voters. CV is just an opportunity for Dems to grab more power. Rep run states have kids back in school because it is the right thing to do and not based on some political agenda. Just calling it as I see it. Really feel for the kids and the parents dealing with this BS
