News-Press Still Automatically Charging Credit Card

What's up? (Edhat)

I was a former subscriber to the Santa Barbara News-Press. Since the bankruptcy, they are still auto deducting from my Chase bank account.

If I can’t cut off the autopay, I would have to close my entire account and have new cards reissued.

Is anyone else experiencing this or have a suggestion to stop it?

  1. I would reach out to your bank and open disputes on all of the charges, and provide documentation that the News Press has closed down. If you want to get gangster, you can look into filing a class action against McCaw, as I’m sure you are not the only one this is happening to.

  2. Call Chase, they can block payments from the merchant ID going forward and may be able to do something about reversing recent payments. But I would not expect more than a few payments refunded. There are time limits on these things.

Getting new cards and/or account numbers may not fix the problem, merchants and banks often automatically forward charges to the new numbers.

Your next steps after calling Chase are to file as an owed creditor in the News Press’ bankruptcy case. I’m not sure if you are too late for this.

I’m sorry, but I have to ask… Why on earth have you let this go on for a year and a half??

  3. It seems the card might have been charged only once a year. Here’s a letter to the editor on Noozhawk, same problem: —>

Heads up to all subscribers to the defunct Santa Barbara News-Press: If you signed up years ago to autopay for the online edition, check your designated payment source.

Each November I have been charged that, luckily, I caught and was able to dispute and erase twice.

How is it that the News-Press can’t sell the presses but is able to charge subscribers?
