News-Press Parking Lot Usage?

[On Saturday] I attended the public meeting at Casa de la Guerra to share my ideas about the revitalization of the Storke Placita as part of De la Guerra Revitalization. One of the issues regarding the revitalization project is parking. I have long noticed that the News-Press parking lot, adjacent to that of City Hall, is very underutilized. However, when I spoke with the person at the “Parking Table” yesterday I was told that the News-Press parking lot is private property and thus not available.

Could the News-Press make a generous donation of most of that parking lot to the City? Or sell it at a reasonable price? It is such a waste of very valuable space in the historic downtown. No one likes a parking lot. But one that is vastly underused is even worse.

  1. Wendy’s parking lot is a blight on the City! It is in total disrepair and not maintained at all. If she were a true citizen of SB, she might consider letting the City use it for prescribed hours for the Farmers’ Market parking on Saturdays only. Perhaps she and the City could share the additional liability costs for those 4-5 hours/week.

  2. Storke sold his paper 55 years ago but it’s incredible downfall has happened only with the current ownership. I as said, the old boy must be rolling in his grave. Firing all the wonderful writers, and the best photographer ever at the NP, has been a terrible price to pay and only done by the current owner who should be ashamed.

  3. You are kidding right? The News suppress was the only local news source during the terrible fires 10 years ago that made you pay to get critical information about the fires. She doesn’t care about Santa Barbara and really has ruined a wonderful newspaper. Thank god for the local sources like KEYT, the Independent, EdHat and others for being part of the community.

  4. Thank you Wendy, for continuing our home delivery daily. No one else can pull that off. We appreciate this labor of love. The HewsPress is a civic benefit and the Sunday Voices section is every local resident’s must read. Don’t sell Wendy and the News Press short. Support it.

  5. I doubt SB Newspress would be interested. You have to be an employee to park there. They have hired a guard for years to keep parkers out of their parking lot. The current Farmers Market is supported be 3 parking lots and street parking. The De La Guerra parking situation will be much worse. I don’t think there is enough parking room for the farmers trucks.

  6. Even when the New York Times owned the NP they may not have kept up the standards of the former paper but did nothing like what has been done in recent years. At least there were real journalists, like Melinda Burns, good writers who got fired or forced to quit by the current owner. The paper has really hit rock bottom.
