New Year’s Community Dance Party in the Funk Zone

By John Palminteri of KEYT News

A free community dance party was held New Year’s Eve on the plaza lawn at the Hotel Californian site in Santa Barbara on State and Mason Streets.  Cheers were heard after a count down at 9 p.m.  to celebrate the new year East Coast time.  The event featured the Los Angeles band Thumpasaurus and the night opened with performances from local teen stars.

The acclaimed La Boheme dance performers put on two shows then joined the crowd in the open air dancing. There was an inside celebration at midnight where the party was relocated due to the city’s 10 p.m. noise ordinance.

Hundreds of people came to the Funk Zone events throughout the day for balloon drops, kids events at the MOXI museum, along  with  special  celebrations at the wine tasting rooms and restaurants.   The Hotel Californian also held a special  roof top  champagne celebration for a special fee.
