The City of Santa Barbara has set up some new traffic signs on the State Street Promenade.
It looks to be part of their “Slow Your Roll” campaign for Fiesta weekend.Good intentions, but the signs are a bit silly.

In the unfortunate age of liability, surprised the City hasn’t made any effort to some speed control enforcement on State Street. I was watching a band play in front of La Arcada Plaza the other night. There’s the outdoor seating across the street, with that crowd and then people watching the show near there. Families were walking across the street, and groups of kids and individuals on ebikes, escooters and some idiot on a e-unicycle thingee doing 25 mph through the pedestrians. This has been going on since State Street closed to auto traffic and e-vehicles exploded in popularity. It’s the wild west on state street. I don’t want over-regulation, but there’s gotta be some deterrent to riding recklessly at high speeds through State Street. And yes, people crossing the street absolutely have to be responsible for their own safety and look both ways. But again, there’s no hint of regulation or enforcement of safe and sane ebiking there.
It’s a matter of time before someone gets clocked and hurt. And in this litigious society we live in, the lawsuit is gonna name anyone and everyone that could pay out. And the deepest pockets pay the most. That’s unfortunate and that’s the world we live in. The City should make SOME effort to make State Street safer for everyone trying to enjoy it.
Very true. Unfortunately SB downtown’s Wild West/do whatever you feel/bohemian vibe is a product of the majority of local voters and the politicians they chose: ultra-liberal.
Here’s a few of their type of talking points:
Spend, don’t think.
More money will always come from somewhere.
Never tell people what they can or can’t do.
And, the best one…
It’s all good!
It’s very bohemian SB.
Why do you think they’re silly?
I presume because “slow your roll” is more of a slang term from the youngsters.
That ain’t going to cut it from what I’ve seen. Maybe try some spike strips…
Or at least a sign saying, “Beware: there are hidden spike strips! (with a picture of ripped tire.)
I’ve been riding an e-bike in SB for years. I ignore most signs and traffic laws. Only two things slow me down:
1) Cops
2) This guy:

Hopefully he’s still in jail… I got places to be!
crs you ARE the problem everyone’s talking about, and you’re probably not even a clueless teenager. In fact, I think I saw you (or maybe one of the other hundreds of grown adults that are also freestyling e-bikes however they want) today weaving your e-bike unpredictably up State on the wrong side of the road, sidewalk, and all else. Total unpredictability is the opposite of following the rules of the road. Hope it’s worth it. Karma has a way of catching up. Don’t bother with the helmet.
Is there anything you won’t yapyapyap about?
You’ve overtaken Sac as the most prolific poster on Edhat. Literally every single day. Bla bla bla. You ever actually fix anything or do you just complain?
Scofflaws suck.
Watch out, we got a bad MF over here!
Just another unsupervised teen on the net.
I know! That’s what I thought. Go dude, just go do whatever ya want! You won’t hit me, likely someone else whose slower.
Whose slower makes no sense.
“…who is slower”. Is that something you can understand? Yeah, that a ‘Duh!’ for ya. So nitpicky. So useless of a comment, but hey…you go for it, anonymous person.
Just pushing back on ignorance.
Nah, he’s likely wealthy. He got out the next day. Plus the bail amount was surprisingly really low. 5K = $500.00. Go Figure????????
More signs that need to be anchored, just saying! One fool threw one of those at someone recently.
Summer is almost over —- Good, back to education.
this is what $10 million will buy you and the city probably hasn’t even stenciled this property as iCity of Santa Barbara and there’s nobody to enforce it and there’s about 40 salaries that brainstormed this idea ( actially 1/2 a body) to come up with this idea
I know. They need to sh-t or get off the pot already, but guess what – all the council is afraid to do a damn thing and so are the paid City staff that are paid well forever (benefits!) to JUST DO THEIR JOBS. They clearly don’t have the balls to do a damn thing with Downtown. No one wants to take a stand apparently. Sad State of affairs down there.
