Santa Barbara County and Isla Vista Parks and Recreation District (IVPRD) officials, staff, and community partners celebrated recent sidewalk and recreational improvements yesterday at Pardall Gardens Park in Isla Vista. IVPRD facilitated the removal of old concrete in front of the park and Santa Barbara County Public Works installed 100 feet of new sidewalk. This is one part of a long-term plan to improve Pardall Gardens.

Third District Supervisor Joan Hartmann said, “We are standing at the most heavily traveled pedestrian bicycle route between Isla Vista and UCSB, surrounded by the heart and soul of what makes I.V. special – its gorgeous setting with small businesses and open spaces tucked in throughout the community.” Hartmann thanked the County Public Works Department for collaborating with IVPRD to make the community improvements. “You can count on me to continue supporting projects that improve the look and feel of this special place that we all love.”

County Public Works Director Scott McGolpin said, “At Santa Barbara County Public Works, part of our mission is to efficiently provide and maintain infrastructure and facilities to make life as safe and convenient as possible for the public we serve. One way we can be efficient is by working with other jurisdictions.” Santa Barbara County Public Works also serves the community of Isla Vista by providing funding to the IVPRD graffiti abatement program that is funded by the UCSB Office of Student Life, and the Goleta West Sanitary District. “This is a good time to mention that it has been a year since we installed the signal on Pardall Road and Embarcadero Del Norte that has really helped with traffic.”

The concrete and cinderblock removal was paid for by voter approved Measure O capital improvements funding. The concrete installation was paid for by Measure A and gas tax funding.
