The United Boys & Girls Clubs of Santa Barbara County celebrated the opening of its new commercial kitchen at the Westside Unit at 602 W Anapamu Street late in May. In attendance to see the new commercial kitchen and celebrate its grand opening was Mayor Cathy Murillo, City Manager Paul Casey, Project Manager Bruce Blodorn, Rich Ridgway, Nancy Weiss.

The new kitchen has been named ‘Nancy’s Kitchen’ after Nancy Weiss the Director Food Service for Santa Barbara Unified School District who has been bringing her mobile café to two of the United Boys & Girls sites to serve free meals to the members. Weiss and her team served 130,300 meals in 2018.

Weiss who was deeply touched by this gesture commented, “Teaching kids to cook is a fundamental key to the door which enables them to feed their soul by feeding others and themselves food they’ve created with their own two hands, their head and their hearts!”

“When my career is over and I build my Mount Rushmore of people that have impacted my journey, Nancy will go on that Mountain twice!  She is a force for good and our members do not go hungry because of her tenacity,” shared CEO, Michael Baker

Lynda Bohnett, of the Bohnett family, was there to see the new improvements.  She shared, “We realized the lack of an adequate kitchen was a real deficit in an otherwise great facility. Therefore, we started talking about taking on this commercial kitchen project by our family. The Park next door is named after our grandfather, Floyd O. Bohnett. Our grandmother, Violet R. Bohnett, was our inspiration. She was a celebrated cook, so it just made sense,” Bohnett went on to say, “Michael Baker, our CEO for the past 4 years was the main individual that accelerated the fundraising and oversaw the building project. We are grateful to him and the foundations that donated to make it possible.”
