A new bookstore and event space in Summerland celebrated its Grand Opening earlier this month with appearances by local residents and celebrities Oprah Winfrey and the Duchess of Sussex, Meghan Markle.
From September 6-8th, the doors were officially opened at 2280 Lillie Avenue for the grand celebration with more notable attendees including author Shaka Senghor, astrologer Jennifer Freed, CEO of Bumble Whitney Wolfe Herd, and musician MILCK.
The bookstore was co-founded by Jennifer Rudolph Walsh and Victoria Jackson with the belief that authentic storytelling is the magic medicine needed to connect and heal our world.
“We are fiercely passionate and committed to bringing diverse people together to share stories, ideas, wisdom, treasures, and tools for transformation,” according to the website.

The co-owners stated the store was named by Oprah to mean Godmothers are the loving presence in one’s life who are there by choice, the “constant cheering section, watering the magic seeds within us, pioneering and lighting the path forward.”
In a tribute to local talent the bookstore showcases a display of books from “hometown authors.” Among them is Prince Harry’s 2023 memoir, “Spare,” Gwyneth Paltrow’s “It’s All Easy,” and Meghan’s own children’s book, “The Bench,” which she penned to portray “another side of masculinity — one grounded in connection, emotion, and softness.” This title previously secured a spot as a New York Times bestseller in June 2021.
The launch event was described by author Laura Lynne Jackson in an Instagram story as “the most light-filled evening of speakers.”
Godmothers is open Monday through Saturday from 10:00 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. and on Sunday from 11:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. Learn more at godmothers.com.

I remember when it was a wonderful antique store owned by Bea Hipp several years ago.
And a garden type store more recently too, right?
Looks like a wonderful space. I love that independent bookstores are making a comeback. Very excited to check this place out.
