FEMA will do a Nationwide Emergency Alert System Test on Wednesday, September 27, 11:20 a.m. Pacific Time (PT).  Read more on the FEMA website.

"The EAS test is made available to radio, television, cable, and direct broadcast satellite systems, and is scheduled to last approximately one minute. The test’s message will be similar to the regular monthly test message of the EAS with which the public is familiar, only inserting the word “national.” “This is a national test of the Emergency Alert System. This is only a test.” Significant coordination and regional testing has been conducted with the broadcast community and emergency managers in preparation for this EAS national test. The test is intended to ensure public safety officials have the methods and systems that will deliver urgent alerts and warnings to the public in times of an emergency or disaster.”

We have Vandenberg, and Alaska, ONLY two ground locations in U.S. for anti-missiles (like recent very successful test launch from Vandenberg). Ventura County has a "Get Inside. Stay Inside" message for possible nearby nuclear blasts and you can see the videos on Youtube. Helpful and useful. Be prepared to stay in your home, shelter in place, for two weeks (or longer), keep pets inside, entertain your family, eat, hydrate. It's survivable if you know what to do AND plan ahead. You are safer if your whole neighborhood plans ahead, too.

The U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention recommends that you shouldn’t take potassium iodide if you’re over 40. For all others it recommends taking it to prevent thyroid cancer from radiation exposure. Can buy over the counter. "Adults older than 40 years have the lowest chance of developing thyroid cancer or thyroid injury after contamination with radioactive iodine. Adults older than 40 are more likely to have allergic reactions to or adverse effects from KI.” https://emergency.cdc.gov/radiation/ki.asp
