What type of mushroom is this? Found it in the La Cumbre area, it's 4 ft in diameter.

Bob C here. This is Laetiporus gilbertsonii (older name is Laetiporus sulfureus), the "Sulfur Shelf". It is listed in most field guides as edible ("also called Chicken of the Woods"), but unfortunately for us, it has a well-earned reputation in So. Cal. of causing gastrointestinal upsets with vomiting, etc, possibly having to do with its occurrence here on Eucalyptus; in other parts of the country it occurs with other hardwoods, such as oaks. This beautiful sulfur yellow and orange-banded mushroom is the fruiting body, while the mycelium of the fungus attacks and decays the heartwood of living trees, causing structural weakening of the trunk. It will emerge each fall on the dead tree stump until it is decayed away. The specimen in this photo looks like it's on the ground, but it is actually on a root or buried portion of the trunk. This species fruits early in the mushroom season, before the rains begin, as early as August, extending into November. Then the mushrooms dry out, turn white, and erode away.

Looks like sulphur shelf to me, too, but I'm no expert. Google sulphur shelf though, see if it looks like a match. Whenever I see shelf mushrooms, they are growing on wood. In your photo it looks like there's a stump under, but hard to tell if the fungus is growing on that or out of the ground. Sulphur shelf is also called "chicken of the woods". Supposed to be tasty, but you need an expert before risking it!
