Multi Vehicle Collision with Injuries on Cliff Drive

Update by Santa Barbara Police Department
On May 7, 2020, at 1:08 A.M., the Santa Barbara Police Department, Fire Department and AMR responded to the 1500 Block of Cliff Drive for a serious injury collision involving a moving motor vehicle and two parked cars. The initial investigation revealed a 2020 Range Rover was driving East on Cliff Drive at a very high rate of speed when it clipped a parked Volvo wagon then careened into a parked Scion sedan.
The velocity of the Range Rover caused the Scion to be hurled 160 feet down the road from where it was parked. The Range Rover then rolled, struck several trees and a concreate retaining wall. The Range Rover's roof separated from the vehicle completely and was ejected down the road. The debris field spanned over 1300 feet.
A female driver and her female passenger were extricated from the Land Rover by first responders. Both occupants sustained major injuries. They were transported by ambulance to Cottage Hospital.
Impairment and speed appear to be major contributing factors to the collision.
The Santa Barbara Police Department’s Traffic Collision Reconstruction Team responded to the scene and took over the investigation. The 1500 Block of Cliff Drive was closed due to the investigation until afternoon.
When the investigation is completed, findings will be submitted to the Santa Barbara District Attorney’s Office for review.

May 07, 2020 10:19 AMLooks pretty gnarly! So glad that the reckless driver didn't hit an occupied car or house. I imagine that purple Land Rovers aren't super common in this city but for some reason the police still don't want to provide any details about if there were passengers, etc. Wonder if we will hear more of the story...

May 07, 2020 12:43 PMArticle says there were 2 females in the vehicle. The driver was able to get out on her own, and the passenger was extricated , but they didn't mention any injuries.

May 07, 2020 01:53 PMNo kidding impairment was a factor... full-fledged stupidity. Release their names as part of public record, let's not withhold anything.

May 07, 2020 07:53 PMWhat does a 2020 Range Rover cost!? $120,000? I wonder if it was stolen? I bet someone's parents are pretty upset right now. Upset for lots of reasons, first and foremost of course because their daughter(s) are injured but secondly, they had to have been going at least a hundred miles an hour and probably impaired because it is a wide-open stretch right there. Hopefully they are capable of recovering from the injuries that they must have sustained from that crash and so lucky that nobody else was injured!

May 08, 2020 07:41 AMUsing GPS the car knows the speed limit of the stretch of road it travels along. It would be easy to limit the car to go no faster than the speed limit based on where it was travelling. If the speed limit is 35 the car could be limited to say 40 mph.

May 09, 2020 06:14 PMSo I know you all are asking why haven’t the 2 girls names haven’t been released ( come on I know your smarter to actually know why ) it’s because there minors the girl that was driving the Range Rover was house sitting and took the car without permission from the owner , it’s really sad that people these days think there invincible and nothing would happen to them and drink and drive and make stupid decisions, the only good thing out of this is that they didn’t hurt anyone else , but the tragic thing is she’s in the hospital already has had surgeries and her friend it’s not looking good for her , what it also boils down to is the parents are to blame no one takes responsibility for there children these days let them run a muck ;( always puts the blame on society or someone else , the kids are the way they are because of the parents & they should be facing charges as well as there daughter I’m tired of seeing this happen so much

May 10, 2020 10:13 AM5312--Think back to when you were 19 years old. Did you do anything really really stupid? If you did, do you blame your parents? I sure did some risky, stupid stuff, and it was not my parents' fault. Many 19 year olds do stupid, risky things, no matter what kind of upbringing they had. Parents' attitudes might influence them, or they might be rebelling against their parents' view of life, or they might just be going along with peer pressure, because when you're 19, often that is a much stronger influence than anything your parents taught you. These girls are going to be experiencing the consequences of their actions for their entire lives. Leave their parents out of it. They are suffering enough as it is.

May 10, 2020 01:39 PMActually I had a job at 17 and by the time I was 19 I had to pay for rent and everything thing else I was responsible and no I did not drink and drive at 19 and never have to this day I know the difference between right and wrong , and to say that Poor kids these days are suffering because of anxiety or stress due to covid 19 is a major disillusion , I haven’t worked since beginning of March and have been on lock down in my home since then and I’m not running out drinking and driving and doing drugs , I’m doing the best I can to protect myself and my family & the community.

May 10, 2020 09:30 AMBoth girls were 20. Driver was released. Broken pelvis and hips. Passenger may have lost a foot. Never ride in a car with legs on dashboard. It’s very very sad and whether we want to admit or not, our kids need us right now. This crazy world of covid is slowly killing all of us in some way. Our kids have massive anxiety and their lives have also been turned upside down. We are all looking to escape in some way and sadly, sometimes we make a split second decision that was not smart. Regardless, we all need compassion and understanding. People handle things differently. It’s not an excuse but sometime perspective can help process things when it doesn’t make sense. Be kind everyone. It could have just as easily been one of our children. Yes, it could have whether we believe we are rock star parents or not. Be kind. Be kind.
