A number of Santa Barbara’s citizens had bit parts in the movies that were produced by the “Flying A.” The movie “Green Apples” that was exhibited in cinemas here in October 1915 featured a group of local boys who played “newsies” – boys who sold newspapers. The filming took place during the summer vacation, and was a big event when it was shown here.

The local paper wrote, “A large crowd laughed and laughed at the antics of the Santa Barbara youngsters in . . . ‘Green Apples’ at the Palace last night. The boys do very well, and have followed the director carefully. The story contains one good scene after the other.”

Betsy's Way Back When book -- 1919 -- is now available in local bookstores and at This is the sixth book in her series of the history of Santa Barbara, one year at a time. Learn more at.

It would be fun to know the family names of the boys before their children and maybe grandchildren pass away. They look to have been 8 -- 13 then, they'd have been well over 100 now.

That's a good question. I checked UCSB's Flying A webpage, but the names of the kids are not listed. Here's the link to that webpage if you want to do some more exploring there:
