A single-family residence in Mission Canyon suffered extensive damage after a fire in the garage spread to the home.

At 5:16 p.m. Thursday, Santa Barbara County firefighters responded to 2697 Montrose Place for a report of a structure fire. Upon arrival, crews assisted by the Santa Barbara City Fire Department found a single story home surrounded by heavy smoke and flames, which were mostly coming from the garage, said Captain Dave Zaniboni.

The fire appears to have started in the garage and spread to the attic area causing extensive damage to the interior living space, as well as the garage.

At the time of the fire there was one elderly male inside who was able to get out on his own, said Zaniboni. No one else was injured.

Crews were able to keep the fire mostly in the garage and front portion of the home while the back side of the residence was salvaged, said Zaniboni.

An investigator will determine the cause of the fire.
