On March 7, 2026, at approximately 5:30 p.m., the Santa Barbara Harbor Patrol and the Santa Barbara Police Department were notified of a kayaker who had not returned.
An adult male had rented a kayak earlier in the day from a harbor rental company and was expected to return by approximately 5:30 p.m.
In response, Santa Barbara Harbor Patrol, Police Department and Fire Department personnel initiated an extensive search along with the assistance of The United States Coast Guard.
The male was later located at his hotel and found to be unharmed.

Did he take the kayak back to his hotel with him? Did he leave it on the beach? Is he embarrassed to be the cause of this “extensive search?”
One would assume that at a minimum he was billed for an extra DAY (that’s also assuming he was still in possession of the “Rental”?)? No mention of an legal ramifications, so possibly it was located? I appreciated all your questions, I think I’ve got more as well…

Did the rental company call for a search or his family?
If the former, I wonder if that’s standard OP to notify authorities as soon as a kayak rental is due? Would make sense after a few hours, but at the same time it was expected back?
