Misdirected Sign?

By an edhat reader
This sign is on southbound Garden Street just before Carrillo Street. City hall and El Presidio are two blocks down. Seems like somebody forgot to proofread the signs. Plus if somebody were to turn right here they would be able to access 101 easily.

Mar 09, 2020 01:07 PMJust whip out the good old fashion fold out map, and it is accurate. Much better than Google map. (Folding the map back can be a pain. It's the challenge that makes it fun to do so.)

Mar 09, 2020 10:52 AMWe used to like the concept of sending Tourons on a Taco Tour. Send them off slightly in the wrong direction so instead of getting to their destination efficiently they'd take the Red Tile Tour and then maybe spend some money at a small locally owned business.

Mar 09, 2020 08:17 AMMy comment starting with "Agreed" was intended to post to A-1583766773's 03:01pm comment but showed up twice ( :/ ) to their 02:36pm comment.

Mar 08, 2020 06:49 PMI would have to agree with A-1583718202 . Maybe, follow the sign directions, take some more pictures, and see if there are other signs with more directions. And, yep, the left-hand turn off Carrillo, onto Anacapa can be a pain sometimes.

Mar 08, 2020 05:19 PMOP, I think you're right. The El Presidio/City Hall part is off target. Why would this sign "direct you down Anacapa," when making that left turn from Carrillo onto Anacapa is such a drag? Easier to just continue down Garden and make a right on Canon Perdido for El Presidio and/or a right on De La Guerra for City Hall. If it's about public parking lots, that's a whole 'nother issue.

Mar 08, 2020 02:52 PMThe sign makes sense if you assume it's for someone new to the area and not familiar with our one-way streets. If headed for the Presidio or City Hall, the directions would get you onto Anacapa to access public parking lots. There are none on Garden. And the Garden freeway onramps are actually just a bit closer than Carrillo (but not by much).

Mar 08, 2020 02:59 PMAnd, if someone is traveling south on Garden, one could presume that they are looking to get on the freeway southbound. Garden onramps and not nearly as screwy and gridlocked as Carrillo, which is a nightmare at all times of day and night.

Mar 08, 2020 02:36 PMIf you go "down" garden street you do actually hit the waterfront and the 101. The 101 is closer going down Garden than Carillo at that point. El Presidio is on Canon Perdido and City hall is on De La Guerra. Seems like a wrong location or a new sign is needed.

Mar 09, 2020 08:11 AMAgreed. Assuming a subsequent sign on Carrillo approaching Anacapa guides visitors to the left, that's a better route from the position of this sign to El Presidio & City Hall than taking the next blocks down Garden. And per another contributor's comment, staying on Garden after all is the most straightforward way to continue from this point southbound into the 101. My vote is that, this time anyway, the City got it right—though I definitely see why the OP would initially scratch their head.

Mar 08, 2020 03:01 PMMy guess is if you follow these directions to City Hall, they will next direct you down Anacapa, then right on De La Guerra. Probably better to keep traffic off the lower parts of Garden in favor of 2 lanes on Anacapa. Not really enough info here to say the signs are "wrong."
