Mid-century Modern Masterpiece Designated as Structure of Merit

By the City of Santa Barbara
At the last meeting of 2022, the Historic Landmarks Commission designated an incredible mid-century modern masterpiece located at 1920 Garden Street as a Structure of Merit.
The house was designed by master Southern California Architect, Thornton Ladd, in 1956. Thornton Ladd also designed the Norton Simon Museum in Pasadena and other iconic pieces in Southern California.
The house has beautiful terrazzo detailing and elegant large glass windows that bring the beautiful landscape into the house.
The Historic Landmarks Commission continually works with City staff to designate prominent and noteworthy buildings in the City as part of the critical effort to protect historic, architectural, archaeological, cultural, and aesthetically significant sites and buildings.
