Can people recommend a somewhat mellow hiking trail that's still a bit challenging and offers great views? My nieces and nephews are coming to visit this weekend and their ages range from 8 to 14 so I'd like to find a trail good for all of them. Not too boring for the older ones and not too hard for the little ones. Thanks for the tips.

I second a couple others who suggest Lizard's Mouth -- even though the bottom of the "mouth" fell off a few years ago, it is a mellow hike with amazing topography and BREATHTAKING views from the top. Enjoy!

Try Tunnel Trail to Inspiration Point. Not too long, not too hard. Visit the pools near Seven Falls along the way. Enjoy the view at Inspiration Point.

I think no matter where you intend to do a hike, a visit to the Botanical gardens ought to be done first. Take the whole gang and make it a learning experience, try to get them interested in learning the names of the flowers they see. Then when you re out in true nature it a much more in depth exploration, they can name the flowers when they find them. It will teach them to see detail in the wild.

Jesusita has a lot of dogs ( on leashes, of course.) it’s steeper than one thinks. I’m glad that no one shared the best ones. Surfers don’t out their best spots...glad hikers aren’t either. Shhhhh!

There are two "preserves" that are basically rolling meadows for the most part. They are favorites with birders. Contact the Natural History Museum bird-watching expert woman. She'll give you full information and directions. One is near Foothill Road, the other is off the Solvange side of the Pass.

Aliso Trail off of Paradise Rd is a nice loop of approx 2 1/2 miles that is pretty "kid-friendly"

Parma is pretty cool and underrated, rattlesnake to the meadow and if it’s warm you can rest at the pools of water for some exploring and rock scrambling. Lizards mouth is always a good time. Ellwood or More Mesa from one end to the other is a nice walk with out the incline. These are all suitable for children! Have fun.

Ellwood is very easy and scenic. Park in lot across the street from Ellwood School and wander along the trails until you come to the bluff. You can access the beach below from here.

Consider a visit to the Santa Barbara Botanic Garden! We have over 5.5 miles of hiking trails that range from mellow to moderate, plus our spring flowers are in bloom! A visit to our Island View Garden at our Pritzlaff Conservation Center offers a breathtaking view of the Channel Islands.

Not too many moderate trails here, everything is mostly vertical but Yeti I agree with - the trail accessed through Tuckers Grove is I believe San Antonio Creek trail and it's not challenging at all. If you can shuttle, there are some good trails like Fremont, etc. you can access/be dropped off at east camino cielo and just hike down. Yes they can be a bit steep but they aren't bad if you are just heading downhill to someone who will pick you up off Paradise Road.

Two hikes to consider: On the mellower side, but still fun and interesting is from Tuckers Grove Park. Enter the park, go to the right all the way to the end and there is a great trail that winds through the canyon and ends up at a concrete debris basin damn that is almost vertical that the kids can walk up, and will enjoy. On the moderate side, but real cool is Rattlesnake Canyon trail. Not too steep, great views of the ocean and city and you have the option to go much further and higher if the kids are up for it. Also a great link to cut across to Tunnel Trail that adds some distance but even a cooler trail.
