Welcome to the first installment of edhat's "Meet Your Mayoral Candidates!" Every day this week we'll be featuring information and a video interview from our five applicants vying to be the next Santa Barbara Mayor in alphabetical order, because Ed does not take sides. Today, we're featuring Hal Conklin, learn more about him below.

Hal is the former Mayor of Santa Barbara who lost the fight to remain in office after an attempt to challenge the local term limit law was refused. He resigned on January 3, 1995. Currently, Hal is the President at USA Green Communities and is Corporate Board Co-Chair, Environmental Media Association, Hollywood, CA.

Conklin sits on many boards locally and statewide, including Free Methodist Church, United States of America. He also reviewed films for Cinema in Focus from a Christian perspective.

Hal’s policy interests include youth and families, the arts, historic preservation, energy conservation and solar energy development. A key contribution Hal has made to the effectiveness of the Institute board has been the priority he places on people connecting on a personal level.

Hall is a DUD. He won't win and your vote is better cast elsewhere for someone with princiles and real ideas. That would leave Murillo, Martinez and Hotchkiss out in the cold...

This interview (and all five mayoral video interviews) was done by Jerry Roberts, and is part of his excellent new website on local politics: http://newsmakerswithjr.wixsite.com/newsmakerswithjr

Hal's thin rationale to excuse his own adherence to views (of his church) that are so hostile to women and gay people and others on the basis that he as mayor will not have to act on these views is bizarre. Who knows when the rights of these groups will be affected by proposed city laws or policy and the mayor will have to be a leader to stop them. In any event it is no show of character for him to say he is a member of a group with tenets which he is free to ignore when he is asked about them.

I didn't see it in the video, but is he allowed to serve if he is elected? If so, then why did he resign in 1995? Doesn't seem too smart to elect a guy that might not be eligible to serve. What would happen then? A 4 yr court case or something like that?

CIVILENGINEER: Hal was forced to resign when he lost the fight to remain in office after his attempt to challenge the local term limit law was refused. The term-limit law was in its early stages then and wasn't as black and white as it is now. I understand that prior to this current mayoral race, it was legally determined that Hal is completely eligible to become mayor once again, just as Jerry Brown was able to become governor again after having served two previous consecutive terms.

Although, I could like Hal. I don't see how he stands on issues I see are most important. What is he going to do to bring business into the city? How is he going to address the housing crisis? Specifically, for the middle class and working professionals that are leaving in droves. Does he have a practical approach to fixing the homeless problem? We need someone that can take the middle ground and is not afraid to stand up against the extremes on both the right and the left of this city. So far, my vote is for Angel Martinez.

I'm voting for Hal also as I did before for the community as I find him to be fair toward everyone not just a select few buddies...

I am in Noleta and will find a way to vote for Hal too!!! The thought of having Angel Martinez lecture us about liberalism & socialism is more than I can anticipate.

Hal was one of the best mayors Santa Barbara ever had. Now, 20 years later, he's like a breath of fresh air on the local political scene. I can't think of a more qualified, experienced, level-headed candidate for mayor.
