Can edhat readers recommend a reputable shop or mechanic to do some work on a nearly 20-year-old BMW? I'm trying to avoid the dealership and their $200/hr for labor alone, it's ridiculous. Thanks for the help!

I agree with CS805 that Stuttgart Motors is without a doubt the finest BMW/Mercedes repair and maintenance shop in town, and perhaps the entire state. (They only work on these two manufacturers.) Prices are reasonable, they won't do unnecessary work, and they are extremely knowledgeable and efficient. Be prepared to book well in advance, however, as they usually have a backlog of vehicles in for service. I have been taking my cars here for years and HIGHLY recommend them.

I've been taking my older BMW to Granny's Garage since I've owned it. Reasonably priced (they don't do work you didn't ask for to cover up the fact they couldn't do what you did ask for; thanks Ayers) and very knowledgeable.

Schneider Autohaus, 2703 De la Vina, 805-962-8015, They specialize in BMW, Audi & Porsche. I took my car there when I got fed up with Auto Group. They do great work, they're honest about what needs to be done on the car, their prices are fair, and the owners and staff are friendly and helpful. I highly recommend them.

Swedemasters at 428 N. Salsipuedes St. (805) 962-6633 I use them for my BMW and Volvo. Nice people! They have all the latest BMW software required to do updates to a car. Evidently not all SB independent BMW repair shops have this, so they sometimes have to take a car to Swedemasters to get it done.

We take our 2002 to Haik’s German Autohaus. Good luck!

Stuttgart motors is the gold standard of Mercedes and BMW repair in town. I've also had a good experience at Top Shop.

Bowman’s Auto repair - 805-965-5051. Brady Bowman is who you want, BMW Master tech. He’s a good straight up guy! I’ve taken mine there for years.

100% Bowman's. Brady is a local, honest family man. You'll be in great hands with him.

I would agree with the recommendation for Granny's Garage. Always gave me excellent, honest service on a couple of older 3 series.

I've been provided excellent service from Granny's Garage on 712 Nopalitos Way. All years of bimmers seem represented there. Not cheap, but less than a dealer.
