Meathead Movers founder and CEO Aaron Steed announced on Instagram that the age discrimination lawsuit between his company and the US Equal Employment Opportunity Commission (EEOC) has been “officially over”.

“We came together in good faith and reached an agreement that works for both parties — now and into the future,” Steed said in the post.

He further added that the company will go on, but without “the dark cloud of a contentious federal lawsuit.” He said the team has shown they can overcome tough challenges and big obstacles.

On September 30, 2025, a proposed consent decree was filed in the US District Court for the Central District of California, as reported by KSBY. This decree is a court-ordered settlement that resolves disputes without requiring either party to admit guilt or liability.

It reportedly shows that the San Luis Obispo moving company has agreed to pay up to $6 million to settle a federal lawsuit over its alleged recruitment of young workers at the exclusion of older workers, a violation of the Age Discrimination in Employment Act.

The settlement also requires Meathead Movers to select a monitor to ensure Meathead Movers’ compliance with the Age Discrimination in Employment Act and the settlement agreement.

The KSBY report further added that, among other things, Meathead Movers is also required to send a list of applicants who sought employment with it and staffing agencies used by the company since 2017. The EEOC will handle assessment and distribution of settlement funds to anyone determined to have a viable claim, according to the consent decree.

In December 2023, Edhat reported that the EEOC filed a lawsuit against Meathead Movers for refusing to hire people based on age in September that year.

The EEOC’s lawsuit charged that since at least 2017, Meathead Movers failed to recruit and hire applicants over 40 into moving, packing, and customer service positions.

Meathead Movers maintains a pattern or practice of recruiting and hiring young college students, intentionally excluding older workers regardless of their individual abilities, the EEOC complaint stated.

Meathead Movers began in 1997 when Steed and his brother Evan were attending high school in San Luis Obispo. With six offices in California, Meathead Movers currently employs more than 700 people, making it the largest independent moving company in the state.

  1. I just love equality for equality sake. I look forward to some geezer like me showing up and being unable to move the stuff I hired them for because I’m also too old to do it. I’ll get the call at Hooters where some short shorts guy is serving my wings.
