Masked and Mighty COVID-19 Campaign Launched Countywide

Public health campaigns take years to show effect. See drunk driving, condom use, and especially smoking. They do have an effect. I don't disagree that this is not an opportune time for a campaign. (See Caputo in president's administration.)

The "Masked and Mighty" campaign is an attempt to educate people, appeal to community spirit and responsibility, and make wearing a mask be more "OK"...cool. No, not all people know the rules and understand that masks protect others, more than themselves. That's why it takes everyone to participate. BTW, ... worried about COSTS ?? There are already CA state laws and SB county health orders regarding social distancing and masks. The laws just haven't been ENFORCED ....yet. Enforcing costs a lot lot more $$$ than what you are complaining about. Cops, jails, more Covid in the jails, court, programs, more Covid sickness because of non-participation , hospital and doctor costs etc etc. And, when the hospitals are overrun and, maybe YOU might get Covid...well it might cost you your life. So, everyone should quit complaining, try their best, and wear a mask.

Hi SURFERGIRL, I have to disagree about people not knowing the rules, because been about 8 months of constant reminders. Unless you live on North Sentinel Island in the Bay of Bengal, or in the heart of the Amazon jungle, or on some archipelago along the Northwest Passage, you know all about masks, hand washing, tests and social distancing. There's no excuse now, only willful disregard. As far as enforcing the rules, it does not cost more than $100 to issue a $100 fine, which is the going rate of a first offence. No one said a thing about jail, so I'm not sure where you got that.

As some should be fined for using the internet.

Basic did you miss the part where mountainman said they wear one inside businesses? “I do wear a mask in the businesses that I choose to frequent and give my money to. I don't want to make anyone else uncomfortable, and I want to support my local businesses and ensure that they are not out of 'compliance' by my not wearing a mask”, please tell us where he says he doesn’t wear one inside? Also I too would like to know wtf general branch means by “anti-maskers” because if they mean outside, not happening. It’s is not real law and that’s why it’s not being enforced. The "Voice of Reason" (VoR) is anything but a voice of reason. The first sentence and the theme of the entire comment is political, when the fight against Covid-19 never should be political . There is a deadly disease. The best science is, that our best defense right now, is for everyone to wear a mask and social distance. VoR says......(paraphrase) " it should be the person's responsibility to keep themselves safe and not make others wear a mask" Well, when N95 masks are available, when a vaccine is available, and/or if any other personal defense is available ...then it can become more of an individuals responsibility . Just like I can't buy a "force field" to protect myself against drunk drivers. People didn't responsibly drink, so now we have strict laws and the gov't had to protect society. Get it ?? VoR is concerned about the cost of the above campaign to educate people in an effort to increase understanding and appeal to any sense of pride in community. If that doesn't work...wait 'til you see how much it costs to ENFORCE the laws (that are already in place BTW). I also have been financially badly hurt since March BTW, but I'd rather not die. I stay home as much as possible, but I walked out of a market in Isla Vista last week into a group of about 12 unmasked students. People that wear masks protect others, including you, VoR. So, VoR...will you help protect others too ??

The WSJ is not exactly a font of medical wisdom, but a mouthpiece for Wall Street, which is only concerned with profit.

More importantly, we should NOT be only listening to medical experts (or worse, a single medical expert) when determining policy, even during a pandemic. They are experts in one specific area and don't take into account the many many other factors that need to be considered in developing policy.

1:37 pm: You should probably be aware that if an actual physician (in this case a cardiologist) says that masks aren't enough, he's advocating for a more extensive shutdown of public interaction. That's most likely completely at odds with your totally economic-driven position favoring massive infection and death.

The big deal is most transmissions occur during inside, close and sustained contact like most flus - just the time when you claim is is not a big deal to wear a mask. So still at this point, the utility of any mask mandate has not been confirmed, nor is it even regarded as practical advice. It remains purely symbolic. Or something. Science has not weighed in on any verifiable data, and the medical media is currently suppressing the 6000 person Danish mask study from peer review, so we remain in the dark.

I agree, Sacjon, it’s not difficult. We wear shoes and pants when required, and most of us wear shirts even if we don’t feel like it. It’s part of living with other humans.

Why do people keep harping on wearing a mask in a car? There are many reasons that keeping a mask on in the car would be wise, as when transiting from one location where mask use was necessary to the next location where it's necessary. Taking it off and putting it back on would just expose you unnecessarily.

12:27PM. Thank you. We put our masks on at home, run our errands, remove the masks when we return home and drop them in the washing machine, along with whatever clothing we wore outside the house. No need to touch the mask in between.
