A man was rescued after becoming wedged between two wooden pilings on the Goleta Pier early Saturday morning.

Just before 4:00 a.m., Santa Barbara County firefighters responded to a Goleta Beach for a reported water rescue. Crews discovered a male in his 60s had become wedged between two wooden pilings approximately 3/4 of the way out of the 1,500 foot pier.

The man was suffering from hypothermia and was reportedly yelling for help for several hours before being discovered by a boat dropping off workers from the offshore oil platform.

Two rescue boarders and one watercraft were able to bring the man to shore within twenty minutes. He was assessed and transported to Santa Barbara Cottage Hospital via ground ambulance for treatment.

“He’s lucky to be alive,” said SBCFD public information officer Mike Eliason.
