A man was found on Wednesday morning after crawling from the wreckage of a vehicle accident that took place on Tuesday night on Tepusquet Road in Santa Maria.

Santa Barbara County firefighters responded to the 2500 block of Tepusquet Road at 5:55 a.m. Wednesday. Crews found a Ford Mustang had left the roadway and went into a ditch an apparent high rate of speed, said Public Information Officer Mike Eliason.

The collision took place at 9:00 p.m. on Tuesday with two male occupants in their 30’s to 40’s inside the vehicle. The driver was able to free himself and crawled 200 feet away from the wreckage. He was found by either a passing vehicle or occupants of a nearby house on Wednesday morning, said Eliason.

The passenger was found trapped inside the vehicle and required extensive extrication. Both men suffered major injuries. The passenger was flown to Santa Barbara Cottage Hospital by CalStar helicopter 7 and the driver was transported to Santa Maria Marian Hospital by ground ambulance.

California Highway Patrol is investigating this incident.
