Dec 13, 2021 05:10 PMI don't know this guy's story, but have heard a number of calls of homeless people brandishing axes or machetes in Goleta and IV in the past few months. Don't have a clue why.

Dec 13, 2021 05:46 PMSAIL - are knives and axes capable of killing hundreds of people within minutes? Are knives and axes used for anything else other than killing? Kinda important distinctions, but hey, don't let facts and reasoning get in the way!

Dec 14, 2021 07:39 AMSACJON, yes axes are capable of mass killings. Do a google search and you will find multiple recent examples. Hundreds of people is a stretch. The largest needless firearm killing was 60 in Las Vegas.

Dec 14, 2021 08:28 AM7:39 -Sail... I did your "Request" for the "mass axe killings" & only came back with:
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Villisca_axe_murders
Which resulted in over the span of 12 hours, 8 people dead(1912). Nothing about "... 60 in Las Vegas". Thanks for the non-related input? An axe is not listed on the "firearm" search?

Dec 14, 2021 08:56 AMSAIL - 1) Of course axes and knives and swords and even teaspoons and butter knives are capable of killing multiple people......but not "within minutes." Not the same as what guns can do, not even close. 2) I also didn't say that they HAVE killed hundreds in an hour, only that they are CAPABLE of such atrocities. How many bullets can be shot in a minute? With a fully auto rifle, you can shoot around 400 - 600 rounds per minute, with each of those being a fatal shot. 1 bullet can kill. Even a semi-auto is capable of about 40 rounds a minute, so within 3 minutes of shooting, you can kill hundreds.
I know you know this.

Dec 14, 2021 09:01 AMSail just stop...his point is very valid and you know this too. don't be a troll...axes don't kill loads of people or even loads of people within minutes. your argument is void of any fact or reason

Dec 14, 2021 11:22 AMLOL Sail, anything can be a tool of of mass killing--including the human body over time.
But, in our universe here in the civilian world of the USA, nothing comes close to the use of a semi-automatic rifle. Sixty dead in Vegas and, what, five hundred injured?

Dec 15, 2021 08:12 AMYou said it not me. Anything can be used!!! And everyone thinks taking guns away will fix the root cause., Get ready for all kinds of mayhem. Cars, trucks, axes, spoons, a mentally ill person will find a way. We have failed in our care of mentality ill people who demonstrate violent tendencies.

Dec 13, 2021 07:25 PMThis is an outrage! How is it that in 2021 a person can just walk into any old hardware store and buy an axe?!?! Worse yet, how can we still allow person to person axe sales to take place without any regulation? The axe used in this incident was likely acquired in a private party cash transaction. We need background checks and axe registration right now! Not only that, what legitimate sporting purpose does an axe like this have in the city? Any axe over 1.0 lbs is an assault axe and should be banned. In addition, any axe with a contoured handle or a lanyard should be banned as an assault axe as well, there is simply no legitimate purpose for an axe to have such menacing features. For anyone who owns one of these horrific implements of forestry, we must offer a grace period to enter it into a registry. After that it’s a felony to possess your old battle axe, but we are obliged for some reason to honor your “grandfathered” rights to keep it as long as you fill out some paperwork. When you pass on, however, your heirs will be required to surrender your axe because they will never be allowed the same flawed rights you were. Next, we need to hold axe manufacturers and axe sellers accountable. We need enhanced liability and lawsuits galore. Everyone in the supply chain from the wood and steel down to the hardware store that sold this horrendous weapon must be held accountable.

Dec 14, 2021 11:24 AMCHIPofSB, come on back when someone uses an axe to kill and wound hundreds of people and when that same type of axe becomes the weapon of choice of scads of other mass murderers--then we can talk about your brilliant analogy.

Dec 14, 2021 08:52 AMThere are insane people. Their families can't control them. Some become vagrants, some violent. All need a place to have basic needs met through medications given in a way that doesn't allow them to stop taking them if they feel better. Custodical care for the mentally disabled are a necessity for their protection and the whole society, especially as our population grows. They are a percentage.

Dec 14, 2021 04:47 PMOh and how about trucks, cars and vans...They "require" licenses to operate, but somehow we never background check applicants to see if they have used said transportation as a deadly weapon before. Let's get beyond knives, axes and guns and talk about the most ubiquitous item around, 4,000 lb vehicles. Maybe not 60, certainly not at long range, but that recent driver of the SUV really could have turned around and killed many more.
Not slamming folks who are concerned, but it's a sad state when we must look at tools and transportation as deadly weapons. What would be interesting to know is that years ago I could take my .22 rifle to class with me on the bus - shooting was a legit sport at the time - and I never ever heard of anyone doing something untoward at that time. What has changed? Why are we so angry and destructive - is it movie and TV and video game content? Is it social media polarizing society and teaching us to hate anything and anyone not like us? Go figure.

Dec 15, 2021 11:52 AMThis guy came into our martial arts academy and we’ve called the cops on him multiple times as he is a new vagrant in the area. He had been banging on our door the past few days, yelling at people and making threats, not leaving when asked… then this.
Stay safe out there folks and protect yourselves.
