In a significant development for one of California’s favored outdoor getaways, El Capitán State Beach Campground will shut its gates to campers for a full year starting January 2025, to undergo extensive renovations.

The park’s upgrade, which encompasses a wide array of improvements, is slated for completion in January 2026.

Awarded to Newton Construction at a cost of $5.5 million, the project aims to increase accessibility, enhance public safety, and update the park’s aging facilities. Key components of the renovation include the construction of a new beach access bridge, road widening, trail rehabilitations, and installation of an updated entrance kiosk.

The park and campground’s configurations haven’t changed since 1978. These enhancements will align the park with modern standards, including compliance with the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA).

One major ecological improvement is the replacement of an existing culvert that currently acts as a barrier to fish along El Capitán Creek. The new bridge will facilitate easier water and fish flow, a change that promises to enhance the local ecosystem.

The new entrance kiosk, designed to replace two current buildings, will provide upgraded amenities for staff, including better comfort, more space, restrooms, and improved internet connectivity. Roadways throughout the park will be broadened by four feet, and existing pavements will be rehabilitated to allow for safer and more accessible travel within the park area.

Although the campground’s 130 sites, parking lots, and entry roads will be closed, the park will still welcome day-use visitors. Pedestrian access to the beach will be maintained, and flaggers will be positioned to direct guest movement around construction zones safely.

For additional information or to partake in the feedback process, visitors and stakeholders are urged to review detailed maps and project updates on the state park’s project webpage.
