A serious traffic incident occurred on Highway 1, west of Black Road in Santa Maria, when a single vehicle rolled over, resulting in major injuries to the driver. The accident took place at approximately 1:06 p.m. Monday and necessitated a rapid emergency response.

Upon arrival, fire agencies from Santa Barbara County and Santa Maria found the vehicle overturned on its roof. The driver, identified as an adult female, was the sole occupant of the car and required extrication from the wreckage.

Rescuers from the involved fire agencies worked for around 10 minutes to free the injured woman from the vehicle.

After the extrication, the driver was immediately transported by ambulance to Marian Regional Medical Center Emergency Room for treatment of her major injuries.

Highway 1 was shut down for approximately 30 minutes while the emergency crews tended to the scene and performed the rescue operation. The closure allowed for the safety of the emergency responders and the investigation team and has since been reopened for normal traffic.

The cause of the rollover is currently under investigation by local authorities. Further information about the incident and the current condition of the patient is pending.
