The United States Postal Service (USPS) has confirmed incidents of mail theft at the San Roque Post Office, located on 3345 State Street in Santa Barbara.
According to the USPS the incident took place on August 15 with suspects managing to steal several bags of mail. In a related attempt, suspects also targeted the Patterson Avenue Post Office in Goleta later the same day, although, in this instance, their efforts were thwarted.
USPS investigators, while limited in the details provided, verified the occurrences took place in the late afternoon without any forced break-in at the post offices.
USPS encourages residents who believe they may be a victim of mail theft to file a report through the official USPS website at uspis.gov/report or by calling the Postal Inspection Service at 877.876.2455.
In a related incident, a member of the edhat staff reports having a check and DMV Registration tags stolen before it reached their home in Santa Barbara on July 1, over a month prior to the incident confirmed by USPS officials.
The staff member states the pieces was processed through the daily USPS Informed Delivery Service which shows scanned copies of the mail recipients should expect to receive that day.
When ten days went by without the check and DMV tags delivered, the staffer filed a report through the USPS website and received a response that same day from Anthony Cisneros, Supervisor of Customer Service at Santa Barbara’s Main Office.
Cisneros stated there is no issue with the address, all mail should be delivered, and he suggested having the items resent by the original senders.
The edhat staffer decided to visit the downtown Santa Barbara USPS Office and explained the issues with a postal service employee.
The employee reportedly stated there was a theft incident around July 1 that resulted in several bags of mail being stolen from a truck that was delivering in a Santa Barbara neighborhood.
The staffer contacted Cisneros again and was asked to clarify if a theft had taken place and if this staffer’s mail was believed to be included in the theft as the postal employee stated, specifically if there was a police report number that could be referenced in order to file a report for the stolen check. To date there has been no response.

Not theft, necessarily, but we’ve had two instances where mail we sent out took 24 days to be delivered.
Welcome to DeJoy’s attempts to kill the Post Office as a service, and turn it into a profit center, or hand it to private firms.
This is very concerning. Why isn’t the Postal Service being honest about thefts? And if they are, it’s sorta with barely any details. Wouldn’t they want to publicize this as much as possible to catch the thieves?
What do you mean “not being honest about thefts”?
Do you think that the USPS is lying about or covering up the fact that thefts have happened?
The article says an edhat staffer was told by an employee there was theft from a mail truck on July 1st but USPS ignored followup questions
Did someone break into each po box to steal mail? That’s a lot of damaged boxes
Again, I wish USPS would be transparent here, but I’m assuming mail was stolen from an open or unlocked truck. Anyone can walk behind the San Roque Post Office and gain access.
