A magnitude 4.7 earthquake has been detected in Ventura County, according to the United States Geological Survey (USGS).
It was centered about 4 miles north of Malibu along the coast, the USGS said.
It happened at 7:28 a.m. Thursday with reports of activity ranging from Santa Maria to San Diego.
USGS has reported four successive aftershocks each averaging about 2.7 or 2.8 magnitude.
Seismologist Dr. Lucy Jones stated, “I didn’t feel a thing – I was in the middle of my morning exercise routine, quite a ways from this M4.7 5 miles north of Malibu. Below are the M≥4s for 2024.”
This is a developing story.
Surfline’s County Line overview camera as well as a few of others in the Malibu area recorded this morning’s 4.7M earthquake. Awoke me as I was drifting back to sleep starting with a roll then becoming a few violent jolts before rolling off again. Clip somewhat shows this. pic.twitter.com/McBvMiTZsC

Just one minimal jolt here by OSM, like something falling over. Didn’t feel any subsequent swaying.
