I just discovered a show on KPBS San Diego titled Blue Sky Metropolis. In the first episode titled Wings at about the 11:45 mark of the hour is coverage of the Lougheed brothers with some great movies and photos from their time here in Santa Barbara.

You can watch the video here.

There are three spellings of the surname on this thread alone, including on the caption for the photo: Lougheed, Loughead, Lockheed.

Yes, this is such an interesting story about the creativity and development of aerospace in SoCal - with some great references to SB. Lockheed and Northrop's hookup as young people in SB for example. Some familiar scenery as well... Thanks for posting it.

KCET + KOCE? Just now I came across an intriguing item on the "About KCET" page: "KCET is a content channel of the Public Media Group of Southern California, formed by the 2018 merger of KCETLink Media Group and PBS SoCal." Maybe the two LA area non-commercial content providers will become reliable SB broadcast channels when ATSC 3.0 is fully implemented and consumer tuner boxes are available?

Fascinating series! Just finished the last episode, and each of them touched on our region. Some of the scenes show places we've seen from the air, including Vandenberg. I've often wondered what various features were, and actually recognized some of them from old photos and films in the series.

Jack Northrop worked for the Lougheeds in Santa Barbara. I live in his wife's, Inez, house.

Yes, somehow I didn't know (or had forgotten) that Jack went from auto mechanic to aerospace engineer due to inspiration at discovering the Lougheed work.

Thanks for posting the link. At about 14:31, the show mentions that Malcolm Lockheed developed hydraulic brakes. Lockheed gave a demonstration of his newly invented hydraulic brakes on a car here on Cabrillo Boulevard. (More about this and a diagram of his patent in the August chapter of "Way Back When: Santa Barbara in 1917.")

I thought of all your great SB history articles and books while watching that segment, Betsy. Like you I enjoyed the part of the segment describing how Malcolm went on to invent modern brakes. So much creativity in SB, in so many fields! What a region we live in, eh?

Cool old SB pix and more about the Lougheed story I don't recall seeing before. Some around the 45 minute point too as I recall. Turns out it's by KCET, formerly our PBS channel before the fiasco that led to our current KOCE local source of PBS. The series is on the big role of SoCA aerospace in California's development. Enjoyed it so much I'm watching the other episodes too - "Wings" is at https://video.kpbs.org/video/wings-mvizww/
