Look Out for Trick-or-Treaters

Halloween is one of the most anticipated nights of the year for kids, but it can be a scary night to be a pedestrian. Research shows that Halloween is one of the deadliest days of the year for pedestrians, especially children. While trick-or-treating with your little goblins this year, consider the following pedestrian and driver safety tips:

• Children, especially under 12, should only trick-or-treat and cross streets with an adult. Remind children to look for cars while crossing driveways.
• Consider trick-or-treating before it is truly dark, especially with young children.
• Whenever possible, walk on a sidewalk. If no sidewalk is available, walk facing traffic as far to the side of the road as possible.
• Follow the rules of the road at driveways and intersections. Cross with a traffic signal if there is one and even if you have the right-of-way, make sure traffic has stopped or passed before you step into the str eet.
• Be visible! Consider carrying a flashlight, wearing reflective clothing or even a small flashing strobe light.
• Drivers should SLOW DOWN and be especially alert in residential neighborhoods. Remember that children are excited on Halloween night and may walk or run in unpredictable ways.
• Don’t use a cell phone or other mobile device while driving and NEVER drink and drive, no matter what time of year it is. If you suspect a motorist is impaired, contact your local law enforcement agency immediately.
