The National Disaster Search Dog Foundation (SDF) has deployed sixteen canine disaster search teams to the areas affected by Hurricanes Helene and Milton. These highly trained teams, consisting of rescued dogs and their human partners, are the latest mobilization of paw-powered units braving the aftermath of the severe and deadly weather event on the east coast.
These sixteen teams augment the noble efforts of twelve additional SDF-trained units currently involved in the ongoing rescue and recovery missions in North Carolina, a state still reeling from the effects of Hurricane Helene. The heartwarming fact that the majority of these canine heroes were once shelter dogs—now transformed into indispensable assets in disaster response efforts—underscores the invaluable work of SDF in harnessing the untapped potential of rescued dogs.
After undergoing an intense training regimen lasting from nine to twelve months, these dogs emerge ready to detect and navigate disaster scenes alongside their human counterparts. Deployed throughout the United States and Mexico, these duos embody a partnership built on mutual trust and a shared commitment to saving lives in crisis situations, such as those wrought by hurricanes.
The deployment of these teams underscores a profound message of resilience and hope. SDF Founder Wilma Melville, inspired by her own experiences as a FEMA-certified search dog handler in the aftermath of the Oklahoma City bombing, envisioned a future where the bond between dog and handler could be harnessed to elevate the nation’s disaster response capabilities. Through her vision, hundreds of dogs have been rescued, trained, and transformed into life-saving partners for firefighters and first responders.
As communities brace for Hurricane Milton, the resolve and readiness of the SDF and its fearless four-legged members provide a beacon of light amid the approaching storm. Their commitment not only showcases the incredible feats possible through the human-canine bond but also serves as a reminder of the undeniable spirit of compassion and resilience that defines our nation’s response to disaster.

It’s terrific that Belgian Malinois can find their happy life as search and rescue dogs. This breed is known to be notoriously difficult to keep as a family pet. I’m thrilled that these hyper intelligent and high energy Malinois are put to work in such a positive and meaningful way. Thank you, Wilma Melville for your inspired conviction. Thank you handlers and dogs for your service to those in need. ———- Unfortunately, more and more Belgian Malinois and BM crosses are showing up in shelters. Spread the word: Belgian Malinois need special training and a job. They are NOT at all an easy care pet. See for yourself: go on r/malinois on Reddit to learn more.
