Winslow Barnwood, a junior at Dos Pueblos High School in the Engineering Academy and member of the Santa Barbara Astronomical Society, had two of his images shortlisted with one winning third place, ‘Highly Commended,’ in the Royal Greenwich Observatory’s “Insight Investment Astrophotography of the Year — Young Competition 2020”.

His two images, “Collision Course!” (highly commended) of the Andromeda Galaxy and “Awash in Starlight” of the Pleiades, were imaged using a telescope, mount and camera that he purchased himself from working locally (at the Santa Barbara Rock Gym).

The images were shot last year at the age of 15. His more recent work on nebulas, globular clusters and planets can be seen on his instagram channel, “rooftop.astro.” Winslow has been creating images of the night sky for two years.

The Santa Barbara Astronomical Society, in particular Bruce Murdock, helped inspire and guide his early efforts. Winslow is passionate about astronomy and physics and interested in pursuing a major in these fields in college.
