I'm trying to find a good moving company for a local move. Who do edhat readers recommend?

I've used a company called A1 Auto Transport. They mainly ship cars but they offer moving services too and I happened to need both at the time. They helped me get here from Long Beach without too much trouble. I know they had a local office so they may be worth a shot just to see what kind of price they offer. They were fairly cheap when I used them.

I second MoveGreen. The two guys I had move me from SB to Ventura were great. They were hourly and really hustled. All costs were transparent and upfront. I did not feel overcharged. They came with enough wardrobe boxes and wrapped up large items I couldn't. It's great to be able to purchase short term moving insurance directly from a reputable company.

I've used Loadstar Movers (https://loadstarmovers.com) a few times and they are great! Careful with your possessions, friendly, professional and on time. Give Joe a call (the owner), he is really nice and goes the extra mile to help out!

Move Green did a great job for us the last time we moved cross-town in Santa Barbara.

I've used Aloha three times since I moved here 20 years ago. Never a problem with them.

local to local I would consider Arturo's. They gave us the best rate and the guys who packed and loaded were great.

Move Time in Goleta. Rodney Every is fair, extremely reliable, and has never let me down. I have had him do jobs from pick-ups at Costco to a full house move from NorCal to Goleta storage. Legit licensed and insured business owner who pays his taxes.

Mammoth. We used them for a multi-state move and they showed up at the house faster than us in a snow storm. No nickle and diming and flexible on loading times.

Just moved last week... Like Mammoth, but didn't think could afford. Hired small, local, with good reviews... Pretty good but not as professional... Scheduled our move, 2 miles away, a week ahead. They booked us at 3 p.m., on a rainy day... Complained the whole time they were tired from at Long Beach move. Had to bring a larger truck..they knew what we had...by phone only. Saved a ton of money but if they don't come in person to eyeball everything..it is risky..

Yeti - not arguing with your opinion on local movers since I have no experience there, but of course guys who have no business expenses nor pay taxes are going to be cheaper...

Cheap is not the only issue here, I've owned businesses in SB. For over 30, years. I do understand P&L. It is about gross overcharging via over estimation of hours involved. Setting an hourly rate that they wish to charge is fine..that sets their hourly net profit and the customer knows what to expect. BUT their hourly estimate of time involved is gouging and collusion between multiple firms. Ventura county movers may be more free spirited and reasonable.

Local moving companies are con artists colluding on minimum hours to move you across town. Moved our business twice locally and it's the same each time. Ridiculous hours quoted for simple move. I started renting a uhaul truck, boxing and securing important items myself and hiring 3-4 guys off of the wall. These guys all want to work, make money and put food on the table. Careful hard workers. Job done quicker, done well and for a lot less money.
