Legal Hunting off East Camino Cielo?

By an edhat reader

A couple of nights ago we saw a man with a gun standing right off off the road on East Camino Cielo. Last night, men were hunting to the south of the gun range on East Camino Cielo.

Right off of the paved road hunting for deer. Is this legal? Would the police even do anything?

  1. No worries. technically speaking it is all Nation Forest and completely legal.
Though, there are regulations in regards to distance from building, shotting across roads and safety about what it behind your target. Chances are, the hunter will be very safe and conscientious about his quest for putting food on the table.

  2. As someone who has hunted in this exact area in the past month, I can assure you it is legal to hunt in this particular area. It is called Zone A and one of the largest in CA. I cannot speak to the timing of the hunting as you didn’t provide a time frame in which they are there. “Hunting right off the paved road” is completely legal as long as you are off the road and not shooting over it.

  3. LuvaDuck: People absolutely hunt “around here” for food. If you’ve ever had deer meat (specifically, back straps) you would be out there hunting too. Although illegal, there are folks who shoot/kill coyotes for, as you say, target practice. Hunting has been around as long as there have been humans, so it won’t be ending any time soon. About two weeks ago we ordered from a take-out place (two tinga burritos, four crispy chicken tacos, small guac/chips, and two drinks) and it was just over $70. It makes sense for some that the price of one bullet, you can feed your family meat for quite some time. So, yeah, peeps around here hunt for food.
