Leading From Within Recognized as Nonprofit of the Year

“Nonprofits of the Year” awards presented at second annual California Nonprofits Day celebration at State Capitol event June 28 Assemblymember Monique Limón honoring Santa Barbara-based organization Leading From Within as the 2017 Nonprofit of the year for the 37th Assembly District to celebrate California Nonprofits Day at the State Capitol in Sacramento. Receiving the honor are Leading From Within Executive Director Carrie Randolph and Geoff Green, Chair of the Board of Directors of the California Association of Nonprofits, CEO of the Santa Barbara City College Foundation, and an alumnus of Leading From Within.

On Wednesday, June 28, Leading From Within was honored as a Nonprofit of the Year at a celebration of California Nonprofits Day at the State Capitol in Sacramento. Leading From Within was selected by State Assemblymember Monique Limón as an exceptional nonprofit organization in California’s 37th district community.

Leading From Within joined nearly one hundred other nonprofit leaders from across the state being honored at the annual California Nonprofits Day event, formally recognized by Assembly Concurrent Resolution 54, which was authored by Assemblymember Limón, who is also chair of the new Assembly Select Committee on the Nonprofit Sector.

“Leading From Within identifies and invests in nonprofit leaders with the goal of strengthening the entire nonprofit sector,” said California State Assemblymember Monique Limón. “As we more regularly rely upon nonprofits to do more in our communities, Leading From Within is working to ensure nonprofit professionals are able to develop sustainable organizations that address unmet needs and advance community priorities. By deliberately developing human capital, Leading From Within is improving the impact of nonprofits and improving lives across the Central Coast.”

Leading From Within invests in and connects social sector leaders dedicated to addressing complex community challenges. They do this through their four leadership development programs, ongoing commitment to learning and growing, and cultivation of their leadership networks. They are the premier organization building and weaving social sector leadership within and across Santa Barbara County resulting in more collaborative and innovative solutions to community issues.

“Though less than a decade old, Leading From Within has built a community of more than 300 regional nonprofit leaders, and provided a space for learning, collaboration, and mutual support,” said Geoff Green, Board Chair, Leading From Within. “Leading From Within is a remarkable example of the creativity that thrives in our nonprofit sector.” Assemblymember Limón and Board Chair Geoff Green are both alumni of Leading From Within programs.

Founded in 2008 with the launch of their first leadership development program, Courage to Lead, Leading From Within now leads four innovative leadership programs. Most recently, the organization launched the Leading for Community Impact program in November 2016 to deepen their support of the northern Santa Barbara County communities.

“The Nonprofit of the Year award is truly a recognition of the talented and committed leaders working every day to make our Santa Barbara communities a better place to live for everyone, and the donors who understand the amplified impact of investing in these vital community members,” said Carrie Randolph, Executive Director, Leading From Within. The award recipients were honored at a luncheon at Sacramento’s Convention Center, with welcomes from Assembly Speaker Anthony Rendon, Assemblymember Limon, and Jan Masaoka, CEO of the California Association of Nonprofits (CalNonprofits). California Attorney General Xavier Becerra was also invited to speak to the gathered honorees and their legislators.

“Nonprofit organizations are vitally important to the economy and well-being of California. But too often nonprofits are ‘hidden in plain sight.’ We are thrilled that the State Assembly has passed a resolution for the second year in a row that puts the spotlight on nonprofits as an economic power that uses that power for the common good. We congratulate all of the award recipients on being honored for the great work they do every day to make California a better place,” said Jan Masaoka, CEO of California Association of Nonprofits (CalNonprofits), a statewide alliance of over 10,000 organizations, representing and promoting California’s growing nonprofit sector and working to bring the full power of nonprofits to strengthening communities.
