And why don’t these youth congregate and cause fights in normal release days?
Are you saying their parents expect them home to do their homework or that thes3 kids coaches are looking for them after 3?
The parents should discipline their children, this behavior is unacceptable.
It’s one thing to good off, but violence is unacceptable.
SBLETSGETALONG, I agree with you. However, I think we need to remember that on regular schedule release days, there are many after school programs in place at most of the campuses. On early release days, some of the programs continue and others use that time to have their staff meet just as the schools do. I’m not making any excuses, just stating what’s happening on the campuses on these days in question. Idle time is not a good thing for these kids!
Which kids? How many kids? How about we not paint all junior high kids with one brush? .... If I guesstimate the approximate number of students in junior high by looking up the cde website - it's 3050 students. If you eliminate Goleta Valley (assuming the kids downtown come from SB, LC, or LC), then you have 2270. I saw plenty of kids walking their way downtown yesterday to hang with their friends, and I'm fairly confident MOST of them were not brawling.
JH and HS have late start Thursday every Thursday morning. Yesterday was a minimum day so teachers could collaborate across content area and grade level. This happens about twice a year. And, yes, I would hope the District was in contact with police regarding the minimum day and the need for larger police presence downtown.
Not just that but they also are supposed to stagger school schedules so that multiple schools do NOT have the same minimum days.
I think that on minimum days the police should have a foot patrol presence downtown. I would love to see a larger presence in general, with even a sub office on state street somewhere, because that will decrease all of this drama!
What ever happened to "reverse" minimum days? I graduated a dozen years ago and after that kid got stabbed and killed downtown, they made it so that you go in to school late and get out at regular time (instead of getting off early). Ain't no kids getting up early to brawl. Maybe they should go back to that!
SBPD and Probation on scene...Another one ran from DLG and Anacapa into the parking lot of 24 Hour Fitness HMJ 16 years old wearing a flannel shirt and shorts.
