Rural San Luis Obispo County Fire Station Shuts Down Temporarily — Here’s Why

Fire Station 41 in rural San Luis Obispo County has been temporarily shut down for maintenance starting June 19, 2025. All emergency operations will now be redirected to Station 42 in Carrizo Plain. CAL FIRE and county officials announced through an interview with KSBY that La Panza Fire Station 41, located along Pozo Road east of Santa Margarita, will stay closed through July 18.

Highlights

  • La Panza Fire Station 41 will remain closed until mid-July owing to emergency repair work.
  • Meanwhile, Fire Station 42 will be responding to emergencies in the region.
  • Station 41 crews will be operating out of Station 42 on the Southeast in the Carrizo Plain area.

Station 41 Will Be Closing Due to Essential Maintenance Work

La Panza Station 41 has been closed for essential maintenance for approximately one month. The station primarily responds to the rural parts of eastern San Luis Obispo County, including the La Panza and Pozo regions. The crew from Station 41 will now operate out of Station 42 until the station reopens.

The station is one of the key responders to emergencies in the thinly populated rural area of San Luis Obispo County. CAL FIRE representatives have stated that the team at station 42 may take slightly longer than usual due to the distance. Nevertheless, the agency plans to ensure appropriate coverage throughout the region.

During the emergency repair, all calls will be rerouted to Fire Station 42, which is fully operational in Carrizo Plain. Amid the wildfire season, CAL FIRE has urged residents to remain vigilant and follow all precautionary measures to avoid getting caught up in one. Furthermore, they can continue calling 91 for any emergencies, as per usual.

Work on La Panza Station 41 is scheduled to be complete by July 18.
