Thousands flocked to Mission Santa Barbara for the annual Old Spanish Days La Fiesta Pequeña on Wednesday evening.

Since 1927, locals have taken in the colorful dance performances on the Mission steps. Franciscans welcomed all to this official opening of Old Spanish Days Fiesta with KEYT News anchor Beth Farnsworth as the host.

La Fiesta Pequeña, or “Little Fiesta”, showcased traditional songs and dance from Californios Spirit with striking costumes and flair.

I thought this event started in 1928. Someone could ask dance teacher Kathy Cota, her dad, Juan Cota, got it started. Juan was a fantastic dancer.

It was spectacular. Next year it would be even better to have someone fluent in Spanish announce the acts and performers.

Those white padres absolutely butchered every pronunciation. Larry kept saying flamingo instead of flamenco. Beth was pretty good with her accent though!
