Santa Barbara Unified School District announced that La Cumbre Junior High Band Director Charles Ortega performed in the Rose Parade in Pasadena.

Ortega was one of a select group of music educators from across the nation chosen to perform with the Saluting America’s Band Directors (SABD) ensemble, an honor that recognized outstanding band directors for their commitment to students, service, and excellence in music education.

As part of this national recognition, Ortega also performed in a 101-member National Virtual Band, featured in a special performance of “Brand New Day (Everybody Rejoice)” released in honor of Veterans Day.

“It was an empowering experience to be a part of such a distinguished and dedicated group of music educators. There were band members in their 20s marching alongside members in their 80s and everything in between. It was like a 5-day educator conference in motion. Every player is an established musician and Band Director for a program, 360 programs represented,” said Ortega.

Participation in the Rose Parade events placed Ortega and La Cumbre on one of the most visible stages in the country, celebrating the impact of music educators while honoring service, tradition, and community.

“I was able to reconnect with 3 teachers that I marched with in the 1990 Rose Bowl / Parade with the USC Trojan Marching Band. Inspired to have been part of a band in this ensemble. I was really moved when we did our performance for the Donate Life blood and organ donor float. It was a very moving and somber moment for the band that demonstrates how music touches everybody,” said Ortega.

The Rose Parade, an internationally recognized New Year’s Day tradition, highlighted excellence, dedication, and service.

As Band Director at La Cumbre Junior High, Ortega inspired students through performance while instilling a deep sense of pride and teamwork. His selection for Rose Parade–related performances reflected not only his personal achievement but also the strength of District music programs.

  1. What an honor to be back in the parade – congratulations Mr. Ortega! I got chills when the band made way for the float – I never saw that on the TV coverage. Thanks for the whole music and marching piece for the Band Directors. I wasn’t in band but I was in a dancing group that marched with the HS band. Lots of fun!
