  1. there are a lot of variables. maybe this suspect was weak and the knife was puny and the harbor patrol guy was never even afraid of being badly injured. on the other end if some huge buff guy pulls a machete you shoot him

  2. 12:57 here again – before you try, let me just be very clear: I am not saying people who attack cops with a knife shouldn’t be shot. I’m saying that your assumption that everyone who has a mental break and pulls a weapon is living a “miserable” or “debased” life and would be better off dead, is inhumane and wrong. BIG difference, I hope you see that.

  3. M-CUBED – exactly. Without knowing more, Alex prefers to assume anyone who would do this is living a horrible existence and would be happier dead. Don’t try to disarm or de-escalate the situation, just shoot them. They’d thank if you they could. Good grief…..

  4. ALEX – Mental illness is one thing, and I’ve had relatives suffer as well, but you’re kind of missing the point. You say that anyone who would pull a knife (or any weapon presumably) on a cop, would be better off dead because their lives are horrible. That’s just wrong. You don’t have any idea what might have happened. You can’t kill someone because you think “eh, they’re clearly suffering right now, therefore their life sucks and they would be happy to die anyway.”
I mentioned firearms because I’m hoping you are never in a situation to put someone out of their “misery” just because of your misconceptions.
Finally, and I’m done here, no – I value my family’s lives far more than others, but that’s not relevant. You don’t need to value all life equally to not think all people who suffer, what may be totally temporary, break in mental stability are better off dead. You do. It’s disgusting, but I’m done.

    Ponder this:
Remember the crazy transient who went into a restaurant in Ventura and stabbed a man to death in front of his young daughter and wife?
Perhaps law enforcement encountered the guy previously and decided “moving along to the next incarnation” was the best move. Threatening people with a knife if a deadly threat, do your best to deescalate, arrest and treat. Walking away is not the answer.

  6. AlexBlue don’t be talking trash about the Harbor Patrol. If the guy pulled a knife and there was law enforcement involvement, and he didn’t get shot, one would think that the officer involved exercised good judgment in dealing with the situation without the necessity of an officer involved shooting. Sounds to me like the Harbor Patrol did a good job on that one.

  7. Pitlocal–settle down bro–you have completely misunderstood what I was saying.
I wasn’t saying it would be hard for them to shoot him because they are lazy or bad at their jobs, I was saying that it would be hard for them if they had to shoot and kill someone because taking a life is a traumatic thing for most people and impacts them for long afterward. So, my sympathy is with the HP in this type of situation.
    Understand?

  8. SB1961–
I guess I wasn’t very clear. When I say “move on to the next incarnation”, I mean that in a metaphysical sense–i.e., someone as messed up an miserable as you have to be to pull a weapon on LEO is someone who I am not too worried about being moved on to the afterlife.

  9. 878–the location makes no difference.
Other than that, you want to have a discussion about rights and process. Okay, everybody has the right to due process and to a just trial so no, I’m not advocating anything other than that. What I am saying, and I think you understand it, and yes it is based on a number of assumptions, is that someone who is so miserable and @*&!@ up that they would pull a knife on LEO, might well be better off dead.
I know, I know, that’s probably terribly offensive to you but I’m okay with that. In fact, I value human life, but a debased life, IMO, isn’t really worth living. And, no, I’m not saying that I or anyone should be able to make that decision for anyone else, I’m not advocating for eugenics, or any other nonsense that you’ll likely pull out. But the fact is, I think many people who like to take the position that all life is sacred rarely do anything to actually improve the lives of others–I personally don’t think all life is sacred.

  10. ALEX – yikes…. kind of monstrous of you, but anyway. Consider this possibility: Some young person is high on something for the first time and has lost a little self control, maybe even hallucinating and pulls a knife on a cop. Instant death? How about someone with a family, someone who has an underlying mental health issue, forgets to take their meds, or takes the wrong ones, and has a mental break? Shoot ’em dead on the spot? Think a little bit here. Not every person who has a mental break of some kind (whether by drugs or by mental illness) is living a “debased life” that is worth ending without any effort to treat them. And no, I’m not talking about eugenics so quit while you’re ahead. And further no… don’t try to excuse your disregard for humanity by blaming those who disagree with you for not doing more to help others. You have no idea what us “anti-murdering people with mental breaks” do for others. No, this is about your frighteningly disturbing generalization of all people who lose their sh** for a second and pull a weapon on a cop.
You clearly have absolutely ZERO consideration for people with mental issues (or kids on acid or something). I truly hope to God you don’t own firearms and are not a cop of any sort.
