Employees of the Kmart in Goleta were notified their store will be closing in October, possibly making way for a new Target location.

Last month an edhat reader reported the lease for the Kmart building at 6865 Hollister Ave had not been renewed.

The Goleta Design Review Board confirmed the Target Corporation had submitted conceptual design plans to take over the location. A public meeting will be held on July 24 to review their submission.

Reports of a liquidation sale is scheduled to begin later this month, but other details are unknown at this time.

Agree with Luvaduck. Surprising that K-Mart didn't try to control shoplifting. Too bad for the employees and for all of us who can't afford Santa Barbara/Goleta greed.

Kmart has been shop-lifting central and about 50% slack-jawed "associates" for years. Not surprised they're hitting the skids, but it's too bad all the same. We have so few reasonably-priced new clothing stores locally. Target is more expensive, draws more upscale shoppers, and supports the same greedy politics as Holly Hobby. If Sears goes, for some families it'll be pay more, thrift store or go without.

Well stated Luvaduck! One of the reasons I like Starbucks so much is that they do not have greedy politics. One of the reasons so many shops on State Street do so poorly is not only due to the high rents, but due to greedy politics. The storefronts would be filled if it weren't for the disgusting greed.

Once again, Goleta makes the right decision to get a full-size Target store with all the bells and whistles. A store that includes jobs, jobs, jobs and plenty of tax revenue. On the other hand, Santa Barbara goes for the "chiquito" pequenia tienda teenie tiny Target with a few jobs, tax revenue "crumbs," all pushed into a hyper built-up intersection. It's a real shame that the voters of SB feel that they can only vote one way or be ostracized by their "friends" and peers. Take a walk downtown SB and you can SMELL the difference. I have traveled all over this country, and to many/many/many other countries, and what we have here in SB is simply a tragedy............................................................... Exhibit #1: 1816 State Street..................................I fault the city for not taking care of this, and not Pini.

Bummer, who knows how long it will sit empty now. Also, there will be now ZERO toy stores in SB/Goleta. Now where am I supposed to quickly get a last minute gift for a kid's birthday party or all the other miscellaneous stuff we used to go there for? Drive to 3-4 different stores? Lame!

Gift certificates to Chaucer's were always my go-to gift for kid b-day parties. If moms/dads haven't been to the store it's an eye-opener and if they never use them, clear profit for the best independent btw LA and SLO

Kmart was also our toy store go to. There are still options - a few anyway. Costco, the drug stores have a small toy section. These days, with the age of my kids - I go to Chaucers and get gift certificates.

SBMH2015 - it is not yet confirmed that Target will go in there. Even if it does, it will be months, maybe a year or more, before it is up and running. I have 2 kids with friends who are constantly having birthday parties and Kmart was my go to for Legos, etc. No where else to go after October!

If you google "upcoming store openings - Target Corporate" you will see the SB store will not have a CVS Pharmacy.

The Target at La Cumbre is a small format store. About 25% size of a regular Target. Our extended community can certainly support a regular size and small Target. The Target representative from the community meeting a few monthly back said the company was looking to open a regular size store along with the La Cumbre location. It is about time and welcome news !!!

The Galleria Target will be the 'neighborhood format' and is just over 34,000 sq. feet. Regular Targets are generally over 100,000 square feet. The Target in the Pacific View mall is over 200,000 square feet in comparison. The neighborhood stores usually don't offer some of the things you find in full size ones like Starbucks, CVS, Photo, etc.

Pitmix I asked the same question in the last discussion about this and I’m told target is still moving forward with the galleria project. Nothing against target but we do not need two of them just 10 miles apart.
