After passing Mt. Lassen we approached the little city of Klamath Falls that we'd not visited for years, and hadn't seen from the air. It's beautiful in that context. That evening we strolled the main street of downtown and spotted what looked like a 1950s movie crashed rocket ship. Walking the block or two over for a closer look, the gold thing on top looked like a big-eared alien in the fading light (maybe a Klamathian Edhatter will tell what it is). The downtown was very developed since our last visit, but like SB many of the buildings were empty. Out at the airport we'd seen a line of Czech jets and many F-15s nearby with rockets loaded for "war games." When they took off the whole town shook, and we had the thrill of seeing an F-15 take off straight up.

A few items about the Holiday Fire were posted on SBitZ.NET last night, and a few more are starting to come up.

I noticed the shot of Shasta in the background. My brother and sister in law were affected by the fire between Yreka and the Oregon border on their drive back to Eugene from the their wonderful home in Mount Shasta. You may have already heard, but we have a bad Goleta fire with homes lost. With this weather it will take a few days to get a handle on it.

John, we miss you and your reports from #154/#101. GLAD you don't have to face this.

I forgot to mention, we were glad for that clearer view of Shasta you can see in the distance over the lake. Once past Lassen the air cleared fairly quickly, though there was still a thin smoky haze even in Klamath. You can see more thin smoke to the South (left) of Shasta than to the North in that pic too. Wind and mountains had thankfully caught most of the smoke from the big fires. Speaking of which, now we're watching for updates about the Goleta fire!

Those "aggressor" Czech jets are Aero L-159 sub-sonic fighters. No match for an F-15, but apparently used as front line fighters by some countries and serving as stand-ins for other fighters. Interesting wiki about it. Sure was fun watching the F-15s at the airport! Glad we don't routinely have them doing high performance takeoffs in SB though, because they are L O U D ! !

F-15C, the single-seat interceptor version, loaded with a dummy AMRAAM and Sidewinder that act as telemetry instruments for training range exercises.

Impressive. Those F-15s are a thrill!
