A medical emergency and water rescue off Leadbetter Beach in Santa Barbara last week resulted in the death of a kitesurfer.

Last Thursday afternoon, Scanner Andrew reported firefighters were responding to a possible drowning off the beach (see below).

A death notice states that Adam Brown, 61 of Santa Barbara, passed away on April 7th following a kite surfing accident.

Brown reportedly suffered some type of medical emergency while kite surfing and was found unresponsive by a nearby surfer who alerted the closest boat, the whale watching tour boat Condor Express. He was brought on board where CPR and a defibrillator were used in an attempt to resuscitate him.

Brown was transported to Santa Barbara Cottage Hospital in critical condition where he was later pronounced dead. The official cause of death has not been released.

A paddle-out in honor of Brown is scheduled off Leadbetter Beach on Sunday, April 24, at 1:00 pm.
