Another local business closes up shop as Jedlicka's Saddlery announced it will close its 2605 De La Vina Street location next month.

A mainstay for Western apparel and accessories, Jedlicka's has been the go-to place for local ranchers and enthusiasts.

George "Jed" Jedlicka began with bootmaking and shoe repair in 1932 which gave the boots with the Jedlicka name a standard of quality. Over time their sales included work clothing, Stetson hats, sterling silver jewelry, and everything you would need for your horse.

Their second location at 2883 Grand Ave in Los Olivos will remain open.

There's been quite a demographic shift in our town over the last 30 years. Not too mention the fact that "western" is just one of 100's of styles that people wear. Retail, and especially clothing, is a very difficult business these days. Inventory is expensive to hold when fashions and fads change so quickly. I wonder if El Potrillo is having similar troubles?

Word on the street is that it is a sexual harassment lawsuit by former employees that caused them to close down this location.

Very sorry to see Jedlika's SB store closing. My daughter is a horse trainer and I always enjoyed going to the store with her to get items she needed. I always purchased my Levi 501's here - they always had my size featured Mexican made ones that fit much more traditionally than Levi's made in other countries. Great selection of boots, too, and I have a fine pair of Ostrich Tony Lama's that I got here many years ago. The staff was always very friendly and helpful. Just a shame stores like this can no longer make a go of it, and it's certainly a sad statement on how retail sales have gone in the world.

As far as "cowpokes" riding scooters now, for many years there has been way more women horse owners than men. However, with all the development there is much less room for horses, hence, less need for a saddle store. Very sad to see Jeds go, a big part of SB history.

The owner said on KEYT that people will come in and try on clothes for their fit and then order them online right in front of him to save a few pennies. If this is how people are acting, say goodbye to all small local businesses. We won't know what we've lost until it is all gone.

I absolutely believe it. I was also talking to one of the long term employees and he said they would also get a lot of people who would buy something online that they carried and then try to return it to the store. Like COME ON people

Sad, but sensible given that the cowpokes of today's world ride Bird and Lyme Scooters rather than horses. Hi-Yo Scooter - away!
