A big thank you to the vigilant students who helped catch a would-be thief in Isla Vista [Thursday].

They immediately called 911 when they saw a suspect take a package from a porch. When confronted she put the package down. The students provided an excellent description of the suspect including her vehicle, license plate and direction of travel. A deputy and UCSB police officer were able to quickly locate the suspect with the information provided by the UCSB students.

The property was recovered and the suspect was caught. The 56-year-old Lompoc woman was cited for attempted theft.

Please report any suspicious activity to 911, and help keep our communities safe!

Sorry, I got this mixed with the robbery in Summerland and Carp. I saw on TV about a family filling an Amazon package with droppings from their 5 dogs (something I always thought would be a good idea), and it got stolen from their porch. Found package ripped open and discarded not too far away.

Bravo! With more & more people installing devices like the Ring Video Doorbell, Nest Cam, etc. these porch pirates better watch out because they will NOT be home for the holidays. "Book 'em, Danno!"

Yeah, because the mass proliferation of internet-connected cameras that enable a gigantic system of domestic surveillance that is happily used and abused by both private companies and law enforcement is so worth it just to thwart the occasional package theft...
