Spring Festival Featured Live Music, Free Food, Safety Services, and Harm Reduction Efforts
Isla Vista Community Services District (IVCSD) held its 4th Annual Spring Festival, a free event that offers Isla Vistans a safe, fun, and welcoming alternative event to the unsanctioned street party known as Deltopia.
Held on Saturday, April 5, this year’s festival drew over 6,000 attendees to the Perfect and Little Acorn Park. The event emphasized community safety, enjoyment, and wellness through an expanded harm reduction strategy, recovery center and wellness checkpoints, and widespread outreach leading up to the weekend. In part thanks to these proactive efforts, Isla Vista experienced zero overdose deaths and no cliff or balcony-related incidents during the weekend.
The Spring Festival featured 5 Isla Vista bands and DJs including Standby, Danny Vista, Wahoo, Konvikt, and Kings Club. The lineup was selected by the community through a Battle of the Bands event held in the weeks leading up to the festival.
In addition to live music there was interactive art and a mocktail bar in partnership with Thriftopia, UCSB’s Life of the Party, and Play Pen. Free tacos were available from local vendors including Roger’s Tacos, Elubia’s Kitchen, Maria’s Tacos, and Zocalo served from 1pm-6pm.

On Saturday morning, over 700 bagels were distributed along with harm reduction supplies including Narcan, Fentanyl Test Strips, Drink Test Kits, and electrolytes. In total, over 800 Drug and Drink Test Kits kits were distributed. IVCSD partnered with Aegis Treatment Centers to support this effort and help distribute these resources directly to the community.
A major addition to this year’s safety and wellness efforts was the launch of the Isla Vista Recovery Center, a partnership between IVCSD and Good Samaritan modeled after their Credo 47 Sobering Center.
Located in the Isla Vista Community Center, the Recovery Center provided a calm, substance-free space for residents to relax, recharge, and access supportive care. The space was staffed by drug and alcohol health professionals and EMTs, offering hydration, food, vitals monitoring, and a welcoming environment.
The Recovery Center served 14 people on Saturday, and many stopped by to pick up drug test strips, snacks, and water. The District is proud of this partnership to allow for a safe space for the community to receive judgement free support.

Residents had access to vital support through the Guardians security team, specialized in harm reduction, and Wellness Checkpoints at Little Acorn Park and Perfect Park. The Wellness Checkpoints served 50 individuals with basic first aid through a local EMS provider.
The Isla Vista Safety Station, located at Little Acorn Park and staffed by Student Safety Partners (SSPs) under UCPD, operated from 12:00 p.m. to 12:00 a.m. and provided free services including safety escorts, snacks, water, sunscreen, cell phone charging, and a safe place to rest or report emergencies. The Safety Stations served over 5,500 community members throughout the day.
Public portable restrooms were also available at the Isla Vista Community Center, with additional restrooms and water stations placed throughout Isla Vista that thousands of additional people utilized. Harm reduction efforts were further supported by increased usage of IVCSD’s Health & Wellness Vending Machine, which provided 24/7 access to resources leading up to and throughout the weekend.
“The Spring Festival is proof of what our community can accomplish when we come together with a shared vision for safety, celebration, and well-being. Isla Vistans are showing that they want spaces where they can have fun while also looking out for each other. I’m incredibly proud of the work that went into making this possible and grateful for the partnerships that helped bring it to life,” shared Myah Mashhadialireza, IVCSD’s Community Programs and Engagement Director.
“Strong attendance at the IVCSD Spring Festival shows that locals are embracing celebrating in a safer, healthier manner. By giving residents high-quality entertainment and food options in the park, people are drawn away from cliffside patios and balconies,” said Spencer Brandt, IVCSD’s Board President.
The Spring Festival was made possible through generous sponsorships, including a $2,000 contribution from Farmacy Santa Barbara and $2,000 from UCIV. “Sponsoring the Spring Festival demonstrates our commitment to community wellness and harm reduction by offering a fun, safe alternative to traditional Deltopia activities. This engagement allows us to foster a positive impact and contribute to a safer, more inclusive environment for all,” said Leialoha Cali, Farmacy’s Communications & Retail Brand Manager.
“UCIV chose to support the Spring Festival because we believe creating a safe, informed environment is essential for residents to enjoy experiences responsibly. By providing drink testing kits and harm reduction materials, we are ensuring that residents have the tools they need to make safer decisions, fostering a community that can celebrate while prioritizing well-being,” shared Owen Meyers, Associated Students External Vice President for Local Affairs.
In the weeks leading up to the event, IVCSD worked with community partners to conduct robust community outreach including door-to-door canvassing, distributing 4,000 door hangers, and running a comprehensive social media campaign. The messaging centered around a clear call to action for residents to “Keep It Safe and Keep It Local.” It included practical safety tips and directed residents to IVCSD’s website which provided a comprehensive overview of safety services, event information, and an interactive map highlighting the locations of all available safety resources throughout the weekend.
Traffic safety infrastructure was enhanced for the weekend with temporary stop signs, community art enhancements to sidewalk crossing areas, designated Uber and Lyft drop-off zones, and signage throughout the area to guide residents and visitors safely. Fundraising efforts during the event included McConnell’s Ice Cream and event t-shirt sales.
On Sunday, IVCSD, IVRPD, and UCSB’s Environmental Affairs Board hosted the annual Deltopia Clean-Up event. Over 50 community members came together to restore Isla Vista after the weekend’s celebrations, demonstrating the neighborhood’s commitment to care, sustainability, and pride.
