I received a threatening phone message just now from the ”IRS” saying they were putting together a case against me (didn’t state my name), and I’d better call them right now. Knowing it was a scam, I called back, told them my husband was with the Department of Justice and wanted to know their address.

They started to give me their address, but then hung up. Please make readers aware.

The Phone ID was “Newbursh 845 784-1410"

IRS Scam Call

Can these scammers be caught by police or IRS calling the phone number they leave and that they say you must call immediately? They are criminals, threatening jail you don't respond. Sure could scare some people into paying.

Yes. I have a tax preparer but I got one of these threatening calls just the other day as well...a robo call on my landline that I just ignored. Thanks EAINCA for repeating the fact that the IRS never contacts folks via phone.

One advantage to having a tax preparer do them.

Tax preparer or not any legit correspondence from the IRS will come in the mail. ANYONE calling you for money needs to be screened and vetted very very closely.

As I have commented in the past, THEIRS never initiates contact by phone, always by mail (this is why, if you move, and do not inform them, you will not receive notices from them). I am not sure how the reinstituted “private collection agencies” make contact but, until you receive, via snail mail, a notice do not respond. Their is a web site, look for irs phishing, where you can report the incident.
