Insurance Dispute with Sansum Clinic?

Does anyone know what’s going on with Sansum Clinic’s dispute with insurance companies?

What are people supposed to do if they have Blue Shield and Sansum is the one of the only places in town to go?

  1. There have been no updates since last month. They haven’t reached an agreement. I am hopeful they will, as Sutter is a huge provider in CA. If they don’t, you will have to find new providers if you have an HMO, and/or pay out-of-network costs if you have a PPO.

  2. This happens almost every year, somewhere, with insurers and clinics in the tri-counties area. It’s like fights between cable tv companies and content companies.
Let it play out before you get concerned. Chances are very good it will be fine; they’ll extend their contract.
I’m sorry for your anxiety, I get it. But experience shows it’s unnecessary at this time.

  3. After having access to our own private doctors, then switching to HMO, and being assigned to Sansum was a terrible shock. Like going to a factory: Doctors not recognizing you when you’d seen them before, starting from scratch each time we needed to see them; medical personal & doctors holding conversations with you with their faces buried in computers. When Blue Shield became available to Santa Barbara, our world changed. We were able, through Santa Barbara Select IP, to get incredible doctors and specialists, who recognize us, and talk to us like we are friends, not just another number. We were so grateful to all the doctors, specialists & personnel clustered around Cottage Hospital in Goleta.
